The motif lines are sandy-cream in tone, applied with the slightly rough, matte-textured finish characteristic of this style of faux-antique construction. The stripes run as horizontal bands; the wave cuts through them as a chevron-inflected line; the dot elements sit between and below, reading as stars or spot markings depending on the angle. On a sphere there is no fixed top or bottom, so the composition never resolves into a single reading — it shifts as the bead moves.

Bead B is darker throughout. From the white-background photographs the ground reads pitch-black, and the cream motif elements carry the same sandy, slightly weathered texture as Bead A. The composition on Bead B is built from chevron wave lines and tiger tooth forms — angular, directional elements that stack and intersect across the curved surface. Where Bead A reads as layered and distributed, Bead B reads as bold and angular. The two beads share a construction tradition and a ground colour, but they do not share a composition.

Both beads are spherical in form — 13.8×13.7mm and 13.6×13.2mm respectively. The surface on both shows the deliberately aged, slightly abraded finish that defines the faux-antique style: high-gloss black ground with sandy-cream motif lines that have been worked to appear worn. In its original form it functioned as a marker of power and protection. The wave motif — chevron-inflected or flowing — appears across many dzi traditions as a symbol of movement, continuity, and the boundary between states. The tiger tooth form, a bold inverted-V or mountain-peak element, carries associations with strength and grounding. Together on these two beads, the elements are distributed rather than combined: each bead takes a different selection from the same symbolic vocabulary.

Spec Block

Motif: Bead A — Tiger Stripe, Wave & Star; Bead B — Tiger Tooth & Wave
Length: 13.8mm (Bead A); 13.6mm (Bead B)
Diameter: 13.7mm (Bead A); 13.2mm (Bead B)
Form: Round / spherical pair
Material: Agate
Age Estimate: Crafted around 2000; approximately 25 years old
Condition: No cracks or chips observed in photographs. On the faces shown in Images 2 and 4, two concentric diamond forms sit point-to-point in a vertical axis: an outer diamond framing an inner diamond, the inner diamond containing a deep dark carnelian pupil at its centre. The construction is precise and symmetrical — two nested angular forms, the relationship between outer and inner consistent across every face. But rotate the bead 90 degrees to the view shown in Images 3 and 5, and the same motif resolves into an X: the four corners of the two diamonds now radiating outward from a central meeting point, the directional reading completely transformed. The motif does not change — only the angle does. What changes is everything about how it reads.

This is the consequence of placing a diamond motif on a spherical bead. There is no fixed axis, no designated top or bottom, no face that presents the composition from a privileged angle. Every 45-degree turn produces a different silhouette from the same etching, and the bead rewards handling in a way that a barrel-form dzi cannot offer in the same degree.

The ground across this bead is warm sandy-cream to pale grey-beige, covered throughout by a fine, slightly matte surface crystallisation — a mineral process that occurs within the stone over centuries as the original gloss is replaced by a subtler, drier surface character. This crystallisation is one of the clearest age markers on the bead, and its consistent presence across every face in every photograph is in keeping with the bead's 700–1,000 year age estimate. The etching lines cut through this crystallised surface in warm orange-red to rust-brown tones, still legible and well-defined despite the centuries, the colour variation between the brighter orange and deeper rust zones reflecting natural differences in the carnelian's mineral content at different depths.

Images 6 and 7 show the drilling ends. Both end caps show a deep chocolate-brown to dark carnelian zone surrounding the drill hole — the natural colour of the carnelian at the poles of the bead, where the internal stone colour differs from the paler body. The drill holes are small and well-centred. The crystallisation visible on the body continues onto the end cap zones, consistent with age-related surface change rather than localised wear.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs.

The Double Diamond Eye-In-Eye Motif

The diamond eye is understood in dzi scholarship as the precursor form to the circular eye motif that became standard in later dzi production — an older, more angular construction in which the protective eye was expressed as a pointed diamond rather than a round ring. The eye-in-eye construction nests two of these diamond forms concentrically, the inner eye reading as a focal point within the outer frame. On carnelian dzi of this age and construction, the double diamond eye-in-eye is a rare configuration — the combination of spherical form, concentric diamond construction, and age-consistent crystallisation places this bead at an unusual intersection of motif type, material, and age. In Tibetan belief, the diamond eye motif carries the same protective and clarity-bestowing associations as the circular eye — but with the additional symbolic weight of the diamond form itself: precision, penetration, and the capacity to see through obstruction.

Spec Block

Motif: Double Diamond Eye-In-Eye — two concentric diamond forms per face; outer diamond framing inner diamond with dark carnelian pupil; reads as vertical diamond at 0°/180°, as radiating X-cross at 90°/270°
Length: 18.9mm
Diameter: 18.6mm
Form: Near-spherical round; no fixed orientation; hexagonal faceting visible at equatorial zone
Material: Carnelian — warm sandy-cream to pale grey-beige ground with age crystallisation throughout; orange-red to rust-brown etching lines; deep chocolate-brown to dark carnelian end cap zones
Age Estimate: 700–1,000 years
Condition: No cracks or chips visible in any photograph. On a barrel dzi, four vases sit on four defined faces, each separated by clear borders, each readable in isolation. On this bead there are no defined faces and no fixed axis — the motif wraps a near-sphere, and as the bead rotates the vase elements shift, merge, separate, and recompose. Image 2 shows a clear vase silhouette at the base of the face: a broad rounded body narrowing at the neck, the characteristic curved shoulder lines framing a central field. Rotate to Image 3 and the same lines read differently — the shoulder curves now appearing as flowing bands rather than a contained vessel form. Image 4 shows the drill-end view: the motif elements radiating outward from the drill hole in a composition that reads more like a cross or star than a vase. Images 5, 6, and 7 continue this rotation — each face presenting a different subset of the same composition, the vase present throughout but never identically resolved.

The ground across this bead is the same deep cool grey-brown seen on the Ancient Round Tiger Tooth bead (Ac-021724-TT) in this collection — the same material, the same cool-toned agate, the same high-gloss surface that has settled over centuries into a deep, quiet depth rather than an applied shine. The lighter cream-to-cool-white motif zones sit within this ground with softly diffused edges, the transitions between dark and light fully integrated rather than sharply ruled — a characteristic of genuine age etching rather than recent production. The overall contrast between ground and motif is moderate: not the high-contrast cream-on-dark of many dzi in this collection, but a quieter tonal relationship in which both elements belong to the same cool grey-brown family.

Image 6 shows the drill hole end clearly: the hole is small, well-centred, and surrounded by a slightly recessed zone of the same deep cool grey-brown ground. Image 7 shows a face where the cream elements are more broadly distributed, the motif zones covering a higher proportion of the visible surface than on some other faces — on this rotation the bead reads as predominantly cream-white with dark zones as the markings, the inverse of most other rotations.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs.

The Treasure Vase Motif

The Treasure Vase dzi (寶瓶天珠, bǎo píng tiānzhū) draws its symbolic meaning from one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism — the vase understood as a vessel of inexhaustible wealth, health, and spiritual attainment, its sealed neck ensuring that whatever it contains can never be depleted. Four vases distributed around the circumference of the bead mean the motif operates in every direction simultaneously, the protective and auspicious quality of the vessel present from any angle of approach. On a round bead of this age, the motif is understood as an especially complete expression of the vase's symbolism: a form with no beginning and no end, the wealth it holds circling the bead without interruption.

Spec Block

Motif: Treasure Vase (寶瓶天珠 / Bǎo Píng Tiānzhū) — four vase elements wrapping full circumference; cool cream-white motif zones; deep cool grey-brown ground; composition reads differently at each rotation
Length: 19.0mm
Diameter: 15.4×14.8mm
Form: Near-spherical oval; no fixed axis; slightly irregular organic form consistent with age and hand-production
Material: Agate — deep cool grey-brown ground; cool cream-white motif zones; same material character as Ac-021724-TT
Age Estimate: 500+ years
Condition: No cracks or chips visible in any photograph. What reads as a cross on the front face — a four-pointed cream-white element at the centre, its arms extending outward to the borders of the dark ground zone — resolves into a lotus eye on the adjacent face, the same cream lines now framing a rounded, petal-like form with a dark centre. Rotate further and the composition shifts again: the connectors between the six eye positions become the dominant element, the cream lines running horizontally and vertically across the dark ground in a continuous interlocking grid. Images 2 through 4 show three different rotations of the same pair, and the three photographs could belong to three different motifs.

The ground across both beads is very deep dark brown to near-black — confirmed from white-background photographs throughout. The dark zones on Bead A are marginally deeper in tone; Bead B's dark ground carries a fractionally warmer reading, the difference subtle and visible only when both beads are photographed together under the same light. The cream motif elements are consistent across both beads and across all faces: bright, clean cream-white with slightly warm undertones at the boundary zones where cream meets dark, the warm brown transition visible particularly in Images 2 and 3.

Image 5 shows both beads from the drilling end. The end caps are cool grey to grey-brown — distinctly cooler and lighter than the deep dark body — with small, well-centred drill holes. Bead A's end cap reads cooler grey; Bead B's end cap reads marginally warmer grey-brown. Both are natural agate colour variations at the poles of the bead, consistent with the internal colour distribution of this stone type. The motif elements wrap all the way to the end cap zone, visible in Image 5 as cream lines continuing to the edge of the drill opening.

Image 6 shows the opposite ends — the base end of each bead, where the cream elements and dark ground zones continue without interruption to the bottom edge. No end cap ring is visible at this end; the motif simply runs to the base. Both drill holes are clean and well-centred.

The surface across both beads shows the textural character of genuine age: the dark zones carry a slightly roughened, micro-pitted texture distinct from the smoother, higher-relief cream elements, the result of centuries of differential weathering between the etched and unetched surfaces of the agate. No cracks or chips are visible in any of the five photographs, and both beads are extremely well preserved.

The Six Eye Lotus & Cross Motif

The Six Eye Lotus dzi (六眼蓮花天珠) combines two of the most significant elements in the Tibetan dzi vocabulary: the eye, understood as a protective and clarity-bestowing form, and the lotus, symbol of purity, wisdom, and the capacity to arise unstained from difficult conditions. Six eyes distributed across the bead's full circumference ensure the protective element is present from every direction. The cross element — a four-pointed form at the centre of each face — adds a second layer of symbolic geometry to each face. In Tibetan belief, the Six Eye Lotus dzi is associated with wisdom, the prevention of misfortune through clear perception, and the cultivation of the capacity to see past obstruction. A matched pair of this age and preservation is unusual: the motif density makes consistent etching across two beads difficult, and 800–1,000 years of survival in matched condition rarer still.

Spec Block

Motif: Six Eye Lotus & Cross (六眼蓮花天珠) — six lotus eye positions with four-pointed cross element; cream-white motif running full circumference with no empty face; composition reads differently at each rotation
Length: 21.5mm (Bead A); 21.3mm (Bead B)
Diameter: 18.4×17.4mm (Bead A); 18.6×17.8mm (Bead B)
Form: Near-round oval pair; slightly wider than tall; motif covering full surface
Material: Agate — very deep dark brown to near-black ground; bright cream-white motif elements; cool grey end caps at drill end; natural minor colour variation between beads
Age Estimate: 800–1,000 years
Condition: No cracks or chips visible in any photograph. On this bead there is no axis and no face — the motif wraps a sphere, and the two tooth elements shift their relationship to each other depending entirely on how the bead is oriented. Images 2 through 7 show six different rotations, and in each one the composition reads differently: sometimes two upward-pointing chevrons separated by a horizontal band, sometimes a single broad V-form dominating the visible hemisphere, sometimes the lower tooth emerging from the base zone while the upper tooth recedes. The motif is the same in every photograph. The reading is not.

The ground across this bead is deep cool grey-brown — a tone that sits between warm brown and cool grey without fully committing to either, the colour shifting slightly depending on the light source and angle. The lighter zones, where the tooth elements sit, read as cool silvery grey-cream against the darker ground. The contrast between the two tones is lower than on most dzi in this collection: these are not cream motif lines on a dark base but two tones of the same grey-brown family, differentiated by depth rather than by a fundamental colour difference. The result is a bead that reads as unified in colour and complex in composition — the motif present throughout but never demanding.

Images 8, 9, and 10 are macro photographs taken in hand, showing the surface and drill hole detail at close range. Image 8 shows one drill end: the hole is well-centred within a slightly recessed zone, and the surface around it shows fine age-consistent micro-pitting and subtle surface texture not visible at normal shooting distance. Image 9 shows the main body face at close range — the cool grey-cream tooth element and the deeper grey-brown ground zone visible in high detail, the transition between the two tones smooth and fully integrated rather than sharply edged, consistent with long-aged alkaline etching. Image 10 shows the opposite drill end, the hole equally well-centred, the surrounding surface carrying the same fine micro-texture as the first end.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the nine photographs — across all images including the macro shots. The bead is extremely well preserved.

The Tiger Tooth Motif

The tiger tooth (虎牙, hǔ yá) is one of the most elemental forms in the dzi vocabulary — a bold V-chevron associated with the strength, courage, and protective power of the tiger across Tibetan and Chinese symbolic tradition. On elongated barrel dzi, the tooth sits on a defined face and the composition is fixed. On a spherical bead of this age, the same motif becomes something more dynamic: it occupies the full surface, rotates with the bead, and never presents the same composition from the same angle twice. The tiger tooth motif is also understood by some practitioners and collectors as a variant reading of the wave motif — the same chevron form interpreted either as a tooth pointing upward or a wave cresting — and both readings carry auspicious associations: strength and courage from the tooth reading, continuity and flow from the wave reading. This bead supports both interpretations equally.

Spec Block

Motif: Tiger Tooth / Double Wave (虎牙 / 波紋) — two bold V-chevron elements wrapping full circumference of spherical form; reads as tiger tooth or wave depending on orientation; deep cool grey-brown ground; cool silvery grey-cream motif zones
Length: 16.5mm
Diameter: 14.6mm
Form: Near-spherical round; no fixed axis or orientation; slightly flattened at drill poles
Material: Agate — deep cool grey-brown ground; cool silvery grey-cream motif zones; band-specific translucency consistent with agate
Age Estimate: 500+ years
Condition: No cracks or chips visible in any photograph including macro shots. On an elongated fusiform, the composition has a front face and a back face, a primary reading and a secondary one. On a near-sphere, there is no primary face — the motif is continuous, and every quarter turn produces a completely new composition from the same set of elements. This bead is 25.4mm long and 20.1mm across, close enough to round that when you set it down it can rest on any face without preference. The motif was designed for that: tiger tooth chevrons, lotus scrolls, and three vertical stripe bands that run pole to pole, dividing the surface into fields that read differently depending on which field is facing you.

Face A shows the tiger tooth at its most legible: three cream-white vertical stripes divide the dark ground into fields, each field containing a hooked C-chevron — the tiger tooth hook, the pointed inward-curving element that is the defining mark of this motif type. Rotate 90° to Face B and the composition transforms: the central field now shows a cream-white hourglass or waist element flanked by lotus scroll forms — curved S-curves with a dark circular dot at each terminal, the lotus curl rendered in the ancient convention. The lotus elements appear in bilateral symmetry across the face, two per side, four total. Rotate again to Face C and the tiger tooth and lotus have combined into compound forms — P-shaped and reversed-P elements where the hook of the tooth and the curl of the scroll cannot be separated from each other. The same etching generates three distinct readings. The six photographs show you all of them.

The ground is deep dark grey-brown with warm chocolate-brown undertones visible in certain light conditions — confirmed from white-background photographs as a warm dark tone rather than pitch-black. The motif lines are warm cream-white to sandy-cream, well-defined and consistent throughout the entire surface. The drill holes at both poles are very small and fine, well-centred in warm honey-brown natural agate pole zones — the same tip-colour phenomenon visible in alkaline-etched dzi where the extreme poles retain more of the agate's natural warmth.

The surface is the most distinctive condition feature of this bead: a high-gloss mirror finish that is uniformly maintained across the entire sphere, across every face, across every motif element and every ground zone. There is no area of dulling, no wear flattening, no loss of gloss at the poles where handled beads most commonly show attrition. This is the surface of a bead that was kept, not worn — held in stillness rather than carried through friction. It was likely kept as an altar piece, and the photographs are consistent with that. One tiny pinhole is present on the body surface, visible in Images 4 and 6 — a natural agate inclusion, disclosed completely. It does not affect the structural integrity or the visual reading of the motif. No chips, cracks, medicine digs, or other surface damage are present. No bloodspot inclusions are detected in any photograph.

In this collection, the round form in dzi is uncommon. Antique Tibetan Fifteen Eye Motif Dzi Bead (TiD-S-FifteenEye-022824) is a near-perfect sphere carrying a continuous lotus network. At-061826-RTTL is one of the few antique agate near-spheres in the collection, and a rare piece where the tiger tooth and lotus motifs combine on a continuous spherical surface — making its multi-reading quality impossible to replicate in any elongated form.

The Tiger Tooth & Lotus Motif 虎牙蓮花天珠

The tiger tooth (虎牙, hǔyá) in dzi tradition is the motif of protective force — the tooth of the guardian animal, carried to deflect harm, to project strength, and to give its wearer the capacity to meet any adversary without flinching. On an elongated bead it reads as a directional element, pointing along the axis of the bead. On a sphere it wraps in every direction simultaneously, and that omnidirectionality is the point: protection with no blind side, no unguarded angle. The lotus (蓮花, liánhuā) brings the complementary register — purity of mind arising from impure conditions, the capacity for clarity and wisdom regardless of circumstance. Where the tiger tooth governs the outer life, the lotus governs the inner one. A bead that carries both, on a form that presents both from every angle, holds its wearer in both dimensions at once — protected externally, clear internally, with no face of the bead and no moment of the day left unaddressed.

Spec Block

Motif: Tiger Tooth & Tiger stripe bands of parallel V-chevrons run across the main faces, just as on barrel-shaped tiger stripe beads, but here they wrap a surface with no flat sides and no beginning or end. The star motif sits around the drill holes: crossing diagonal lines forming asterisk-like points, with a ring circling each bore. Because it wraps a sphere, the composition never settles into a single front; it reads differently from every angle.

The surface is the most dramatically aged in our carnelian collection. Heavy white-cream calcification covers every face, sitting in and above the grooves rather than simply staining them. On Face A (Image 2) the deposits are heavy and merge with the motif lines in places. On Face B (Image 4) they are lighter, and the tiger stripe chevrons read clearly, showing the design underneath is intact. Face D (Image 6) has the roughest, most built-up area at the top. This uneven distribution — heavy in some places, light in others — is what natural long-term deposits look like.

The drill hole face (Image 3) is the most complex view: a small, slightly off-centre hole ringed by the star motif, with lines radiating outward and tiger stripe chevrons framing the edge. On this bead there is no separation and no fixed face — the cream-tan lines wrap the sphere in continuous diagonal curves, and what reads as a wave from one angle reads as a stacked V-chevron tooth from another. Image 2 shows the primary face: two parallel lines moving in a flowing diagonal rhythm across the dark ground, the upper line curving gently as it traverses the hemisphere. Rotate 45 degrees to Image 3 and the same lines read as two nested chevrons pointing toward a shared apex — the wave's horizontal movement now resolved into an upward-pointing form. Image 4 continues the rotation: the chevron quality becomes dominant, the lines now reading as three distinct V-forms stacked in a column rather than as a wave across the surface. The bead does not have two motifs. It has one set of lines that reads as two different motifs depending entirely on how you hold it.

The ground across this bead is deep dark brown to near-black — the same ground character as the Six Eye Lotus & Cross bead (At-121025-6ELC2), the two beads sharing the same crafting style, the same technique, and the same production era. The motif lines are warm sandy-cream to honey-tan, slightly warmer in tone than a pure white cream — the same sandy quality visible on At-121025-6ELC2, consistent with this shared production tradition. The surface across both beads is smooth and high-gloss in the dark zones, with a slightly more matte and granular character in the cream motif zones — a surface texture distinction consistent with the differential weathering of etched and unetched surfaces over two to four centuries.

Image 5 shows one drill end: a warm chocolate-brown zone surrounding the drill hole, the natural agate colour at the pole deeper and warmer than the near-black body. Image 6 shows the opposite drill end at a lower angle: the same warm chocolate-brown end cap zone, the motif lines wrapping to the edge of the drill opening, a cream-tan V-element visible adjacent to the hole.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the five photographs.

The Wave & Tiger Tooth Motif

The wave (波紋, bō wén) and tiger tooth (虎牙, hǔ yá) are among the most fundamental elements in the dzi vocabulary — the wave associated with continuous flow and unbroken fortune, the tooth with the strength and courage of the tiger. On many dzi these elements appear separately, each occupying its own face. On a spherical bead they are not separate elements but the same chevron construction read at different angles — a unified composition that carries both symbolic associations simultaneously, without requiring the viewer to choose between them. In Tibetan belief, a bead that holds both wave and tiger tooth is understood as combining continuity with strength: the fortune that flows without interruption, protected by the courage to move through whatever stands in its way.

Spec Block

Motif: Wave & Tiger Tooth (波紋 / 虎牙) — continuous cream-tan chevron lines wrapping full circumference; reads as wave or stacked tiger tooth depending on orientation; deep dark brown to near-black ground
Length: 18.6mm
Diameter: 17.5mm
Form: Near-spherical round; no fixed axis or orientation; same crafting style as At-121025-6ELC2
Material: Agate — deep dark brown to near-black ground; warm sandy-cream to honey-tan motif lines; warm chocolate-brown end cap poles
Age Estimate: 200–400 years
Condition: No cracks or chips visible in any photograph. This bead reverses that relationship entirely. The ground is warm cream-beige — a sandy, slightly matte tone that covers the majority of each face — and the deep dark brown to near-black zones sit within it as bold, contained forms rather than as a background the cream lines are drawn across. The cross element at the centre of the primary face (Image 2) reads as a four-pointed cream-beige star form enclosed within a dark frame; the six eye positions around the circumference appear as cream-beige rounded forms with dark centres, the dark reading as the pupil and the cream as the surrounding field. Turn the bead 90 degrees (Image 3) and the composition shifts: the same elements now read as a different arrangement, the dark zones more visually dominant from this angle, the cross less immediately legible. Images 4 and 5 continue the rotation — each face presenting a fresh reading of the same motif, the composition never fully settling into a single resolved statement.

The cream-beige ground across this bead is consistent throughout all six photographs — a warm, sandy tone that sits closer to cream than to white, with a slightly granular, matte surface character that distinguishes it from the high-gloss ground of more recent pieces. The dark zones are deep dark brown approaching near-black, warm rather than cool in undertone, with softly diffused edges at the boundary between dark and cream — the signature of age-consistent etching in which the original sharp line has settled and spread very slightly into the surrounding ground over two to four centuries.

Images 6 and 7 show both drill ends. The end cap zones at both poles are surrounded by a deep warm dark brown zone — slightly warmer and more clearly brown than the near-black body dark zones, the natural agate colour at the poles distinct from the etched body. Both drill holes are small and well-centred. The motif elements continue to the edge of the end cap zones on both ends, visible in Images 6 and 7 as cream-beige star and connector forms running to the lip of the drill opening.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs.

The Six Eye Lotus & Cross Motif

The Six Eye Lotus dzi (六眼蓮花天珠) combines the eye — protective and clarity-bestowing — with the lotus, symbol of purity and wisdom. Six eyes distributed across the full circumference ensure the protective quality is present from every direction. The cross element — a four-pointed form at each face centre — adds a second layer of symbolic geometry, associated with positive energy radiating in all directions. In Tibetan belief, this motif is associated with wisdom, the prevention of misfortune through clear perception, and the capacity to navigate difficulty without being clouded by it. Rotate the bead and a new vase comes into view as the previous one curves away. The photographs in this listing capture four distinct faces across the two beads, and across those four angles the Treasure Vase motif reads differently each time: full-face with the classic Bumpa silhouette centred and clear; partial-face with the vase neck and handles just visible at the edge; equatorial view where the organic cream lattice connecting the four vases dominates; and the drill-hole pole, where the lattice converges and the form reveals itself as a globe held together by a continuous network of cream lines.

This pair is distinguished from others in this collection by the depth of the ground colour. The agate on both beads carries a dark tone — not the lighter warm brown of earlier Taiwan pieces, but a deep, near-black dark brown that gives the cream motif lines exceptional contrast. The cream itself has a slightly golden warmth rather than a stark white — a characteristic of the natural agate used in quality Taiwan vintage production, and a quality that becomes more pronounced as the beads age and patinate. Both beads show honest surface weathering: micro-texture, fine pitting, and the gentle matte irregularity that distinguishes natural aged agate from the glassy uniformity of modern reproductions.

The two beads are not identical — nor should they be. Bead 1 measures 20.5mm × 17.4mm; Bead 2 measures 20.9mm × 18.1mm. Both are slightly oval rather than perfectly spherical, with a gentle egg-like profile that is characteristic of hand-crafted round dzi rather than machine-produced spheres. The surfaces of the two beads carry slightly different weathering character — Bead 1 shows more pronounced surface texture and micro-pitting; Bead 2 presents a slightly smoother face. Together they read as a matched pair: same motif, same palette, same origin, same intent — with the minor individual differences that confirm they are genuine objects rather than factory duplicates.

The Treasure Vase Motif — known in Tibetan as Bumpa (བུམ་པ) — is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. The vessel is understood as inexhaustible: a container that never empties, overflowing continuously with wealth, health, and blessings. In dzi practice, the Treasure Vase bead is worn or placed with the intention of attracting abundance across multiple dimensions simultaneously — material prosperity, physical wellbeing, and the removal of obstacles to good fortune. Unlike the majority of dzi beads where dark ground carries cream motif, this piece is ground-inverted: the cream-white is the dominant surface, and the dark brown to pitch-black motif zones sit within it. On the main faces — visible in images 1, 2, and 3 — the tiger tooth element presents as stacked chevron bands pointing downward across the face, separated by a horizontal dark band across the upper zone and anchored by small dark dot elements at the poles. Each rotation shifts the chevron composition: image 1 shows the full stack reading wide and symmetrical; image 2 presents from a slightly different angle where the upper chevron catches the light differently; image 3 shifts again, and the lower dark zone warms perceptibly to deep brown. On a round bead, all readings are valid and none is definitive.

The opposite axis — visible in images 4 and 5 — holds the longevity element. Image 4 (drill-end view) shows a cross-form cream element against the darker ground, the characteristic structural unit of the longevity/tortoise shell motif family. Image 5 (opposite drill end) shows the cream ground reasserting itself with the dark motif wrapping around from below. The composition across both axes is complete and consistent.

The cream ground shows the fine granular matte texture of aged agate — the surface has the characteristic softness of etched agate that has been handled and worn over centuries, distinct from the smooth gloss of the dark motif zones. A very minor surface mark is present near the lower centre of the face in image 3, consistent with age and handling. A small shallow surface chip is visible adjacent to the drill hole in image 4 — superficial and localised, with no structural consequence. No cracks are present anywhere on the piece in any of the five photographs.

At 19.3×16.7mm this is a compact piece — small enough for a bracelet or necklace focal bead, with the full composite motif distributed across its surface.

The Tiger Tooth & Longevity Motif

The tiger tooth motif on dzi beads represents strength, protection, and the warding off of negative forces — the downward-pointing chevrons evoke the protective energy of the tiger, one of the four sacred animals in Tibetan tradition. The longevity motif (壽, shou) is associated with long life, health, and sustained vitality, often appearing as an interlocking geometric form on round dzi. When these two motifs combine on a single bead, the result is understood as layering protective force with an aspiration toward long and healthy life — a pairing sought for personal wear as much as for its symbolic completeness.

Motif: Tiger Tooth & Longevity
Length (max): 19.3mm
Diameter (max): 16.7mm
Form: Round (oval/spherical)
Material: Agate (cream-dominant ground; dark brown to pitch-black motif zones; consistent matte surface texture throughout)
Age Estimate: 200–300 years
Condition: Very minor surface mark near lower centre face (image 3). What you see is what ships.

Turn either of these beads and the vase shifts — what reads as a wide-shouldered vessel from one angle becomes a chalice or trophy from the opposite side, the same cream lines reorganising into a different silhouette as the bead rotates in the hand.

These two round dzi were made in Taiwan in the 1980s, using the same crafting tradition as the vintage round double wave pairs listed in this shop — the same style of cream etching on a dark agate ground, the same rounded ovoid form, the same quality of line work that characterises this period of Taiwan dzi production. The motif is a treasure vase variant: the classic bumpa form, rendered here with a distinctive rounded top and wide-shouldered body that gives each face of the bead a slightly different reading depending on the orientation.

The ground on both beads is a deep, rich dark brown — confirmed from the white-background photos. The two beads share this ground tone but differ in surface character. Bead A (20.7×18.3mm) carries a slightly warmer surface, with fine natural texture visible across the dark zones and a warm brown cast at the inner edges of the cream lines. Bead B (20.1×17.7mm) presents a smoother, more uniform surface, and the cream lines are crisper at their centres — cooler in tone, with warm brown appearing only at the immediate boundary where cream meets dark ground. Side by side, this difference is subtle but consistent across all angles.

From the end-drill views, the cream lines of the motif extend around the full equator of each bead, forming large lobed zones that divide the dark ground in a pattern quite different from what any single face-on view would suggest. Rotating either bead slowly reveals the full composition — a continuous cream network wrapping the entire surface.

Both beads are in good condition. The fine surface texture on Bead A is a natural characteristic of the agate and its age, not damage. The drill openings on both are clean and consistent with vintage Taiwan production. Each bead is slightly ovoid rather than perfectly spherical — a natural feature of this form and period.

The Treasure Vase Motif

The treasure vase — bumpa in Tibetan — is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most enduring motifs in dzi tradition. It is the vessel of abundance: an inexhaustible source of wealth, health, and all that is wished for. On dzi beads the treasure vase motif is associated with the fulfilment of wishes, the removal of obstacles, and the sustaining of good fortune. A pair amplifies this symbolism — two vessels together are understood in the Tibetan tradition as a doubling of the auspicious energy, and as an expression of completeness.

Spec Block

Motif: Treasure Vase Variant
Diameter × Height: 18.3×20.7mm (Bead A) | 17.7×20.1mm (Bead B)
Form: Round (ovoid)
Material: Agate
Age Estimate: Vintage — 1980s Taiwan production
Condition: Good — fine natural surface texture on Bead A consistent with age; no chips or cracks observed from available photos on either bead
Bloodspots: None
Product ID: V-071426-TVV
Collection: New & Vintage Dzi | Taiwan Dzi | Round Beads | Pairs & Sets

Its companion pieces:

Vintage Round Treasure Vase Dzi Bead Pair, 20.5–20.9mm, Dark Agate, Taiwan (V-052526-TVP) — $600.00

Vintage Double Wave Round Dzi Bead Pair, 20.2×17.6mm & 20.3×17.3mm, dark brown & honey-tan (V-060426-DWP) — $600.00

For treasure vase motif in antique barrel form, see:

Antique Two Eye & Treasure Vase Dzi Bead, 30.2 × 10.9mm, dark brown agate fusiform (At-062226-2ETV2) — $1,200.00

Further reading:

Taiwan Dzi Beads: A Guide to 1980s Vintage Dzi

Dzi Bead Motifs and Their Meanings

All photos are unretouched. The wave bands wrap the entire surface of each bead — there is no single fixed face, no top or bottom, only the continuous composition of two undulating cream-pale bands against the dark ground that presents differently at every rotation. From the body-shot angles, the waves read as two parallel horizontal undulating lines running around the equator. From the drill-end angles, the same waves resolve into large sweeping arcs that divide each pole into curved segments of dark and pale. The composition is the same in both cases; the reading is entirely different.

The two beads share the double wave motif and the same 1980s Taiwan crafting tradition but carry distinct colour characters. Bead A (20.6×18.0mm) has a very deep dark brown ground that deepens toward near-black in its darkest zones, with wave bands in a slightly cooler cream-pale tone. The drill pole on Bead A is deep dark, approaching the darkest tone present anywhere on the piece. Bead B (20.4×17.4mm) carries a warmer dark brown ground — distinctly browner in character — with wave bands in a slightly warmer honey-cream tone. The drill pole on Bead B is dark brown rather than the deeper tone of Bead A's pole. Side by side the distinction is consistent: Bead A reads cooler and deeper; Bead B reads warmer throughout.

Both beads are in good condition. Fine age-consistent surface marks are present on both. The drill openings are small and clean. In the Tibetan tradition the wave motif also connects to water and its qualities: adaptability, persistence, and the capacity to sustain life across all conditions. A pair of double wave beads amplifies this symbolism — two beads, each carrying two waves, create a set of four flowing elements that together express completeness and unobstructed movement in all directions.

Spec Block

Motif: Double Wave
Diameter × Height: 18.0×20.6mm (Bead A) | 17.4×20.4mm (Bead B)
Form: Round (slightly ovoid)
Material: Agate
Age Estimate: Vintage — 1980s Taiwan production
Condition: Good — fine age-consistent surface marks on both beads; no chips or cracks observed from available photos
Bloodspots: None
Product ID: V-071426-DWP3
Collection: New & Vintage Dzi | Taiwan Dzi | Round Beads | Pairs & Sets

Its companion pieces — Round Double Wave family:

Antique Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead — (At-0426-DW2) — $500.00

Vintage Double Wave Round Dzi Bead Pair, 20.2×17.6mm & 20.3×17.3mm, dark brown & honey-tan (V-060426-DWP) — $600.00

For double wave in antique barrel form, see the Antique Dzi collection.

Further reading:

Taiwan Dzi Beads: A Guide to 1980s Vintage Dzi

Dzi Bead Motifs and Their Meanings

All photos are unretouched. This one carries three distinct symbolic elements distributed across its full surface — four eye forms, lotus petals, and a treasure vase — and the relationship between them shifts completely depending on where you are looking from. From one angle, two cream eye forms sit above a horizontal connecting bar and a lotus arch below, the whole face reading as a stacked devotional composition. Rotate ninety degrees and the connected double-arch of the lotus petals dominates the upper zone while a cream cross-bar form anchors the lower register. Rotate again and a scroll-like cream form emerges at the upper zone with curved arms below — the treasure vase element showing itself from this face. Turn to any angle between these and the cream lines connect differently, the dark brown ground opening and closing around the motif elements in a composition that never fully stabilises into one reading.

This is the defining quality of antique round dzi in this tradition: the motif is designed to move. The lotus (པད་མ, pema) represents purity and the capacity of enlightened qualities to arise from ordinary conditions — the flower rooted in mud, blooming above the water. The treasure vase is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism, signifying inexhaustible abundance and the fulfilment of wishes. Rotate ninety degrees and the same bead shows something different: the V-forms open out into flowing sinuous waves that cross the body in organic curves, the lines now reading as movement rather than geometry. Both readings are accurate. Both are the same stone. The tiger tooth carries the power and protective ferocity of the tiger, one of the most auspicious animals in the Tibetan and Himalayan traditions. Together on a round bead, where the motif wraps the full sphere and reads differently from every angle, the combination creates a composition of dynamic, protective energy that moves with the bead rather than sitting fixed upon it. Turn it and the equatorial band of lotus-framed cells rotates past you one at a time, each one a rectangular field of white etching enclosing a curved arch and a centred lotus element. Tilt it toward either pole and a single large concentric-ring eye opens up, its centre exactly where the drill passes through the stone. The two polar eyes and the six equatorial cells together account for all eight eyes — but you never see them all at once. The bead has to be turned to give them up.

The stone is white agate — a pale warm grey-white that sits in a different register entirely from the dark-ground dzi more commonly seen in this tradition. The etched lines read as stark bright white against it, the contrast softer than on a black or brown ground but the composition no less precise. In the glossier zones of the ground, the agate's translucency shows through; in the etched lines, centuries of crystallisation have built up a granular, matte surface texture that is one of the clearest age signals a very old dzi can carry. The white lines on this bead are not smooth — they are rough with mineral accumulation, and that roughness is what makes them old.

The surface throughout shows age-consistent crystallisation across the etched zones, with partial gloss retained in the ground between the lines. This combination — crystallised etching, translucent ground zones, micro-surface matting — is fully consistent with the 1,000–2,000 year age estimate. No cracks and no chips are visible.

No bloodspot inclusions are visible in any photo at the resolution provided.

The Eight Eye Lotus Motif

The eight eye lotus dzi (八眼蓮花天珠) carries one of the most auspicious numerical associations in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology. Eight corresponds to the Noble Eightfold Path — right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration — the complete framework the Buddha set out for the cessation of suffering. The lotus element woven into the eye frames adds a second layer of meaning: the lotus rises through water and mud to bloom in pure light, a symbol of enlightenment arising from the ordinary world. Together, eight eyes and lotus frames make this one of the more complex and symbolically layered motif combinations in the dzi tradition. The polar placement of two eyes at the drill ends is a refinement seen on older spherical dzi — the entire surface of the bead becomes motif, with no zone left unmarked.

Spec Block

Motif: Eight Eye Lotus
Diameter: 24.4mm
Secondary Diameter: 22.4mm
Form: Round (spherical)
Material: White agate
Age Estimate: 1,000–2,000 years
Condition: Age-consistent surface crystallisation throughout etched zones. A round bead takes more material and more polishing to make, which is part of why round agate beads of this age are rarely seen. It is drilled straight through, entering and leaving at the two poles.

The agate itself is the star. The upper half and the equator are a deep dark brown, nearly black in strong light, with real depth. The lower half shifts into a warmer reddish-brown — natural variation within the same stone — so the bead changes as it turns. The surface has a smooth, settled polish from centuries of handling, neither glassy nor matte.

Scattered across it are fifteen to twenty small cream to silver-grey flecks — natural mineral inclusions within the agate, from under a millimetre to about two millimetres, spread without pattern across the whole sphere. Against the dark ground they look like a field of stars, which gives this bead type its name.

Two condition notes. First, there is a natural dimple — a shallow, smooth-edged hollow at the equator, visible in the close-ups. It formed in the stone itself rather than from a chip or knock, does not extend into the body and does not affect the bead's strength, but it is a visible irregularity. Second, both drill ends carry calcification: a cream-tan to cream-grey mineral deposit around the holes, spreading broadly across the darker pole and forming a tighter ring at the warmer end. This is common on very old drilled beads that spent long periods in mineral-rich ground and is part of its patina. Both holes remain usable for stringing.

The Stars Motif

Round agate beads with natural inclusions that look like stars are a distinct category in the ancient Himalayan tradition, separate from beads with etched designs. Here the motif is entirely natural — the bead was chosen and treasured because its inclusions were seen as meaningful. A dark surface scattered with points of light is the night sky, and such a stone was understood to carry something of the heavens within it. In Tibetan tradition, natural formations like these were often seen as signs of a stone's spiritual character rather than as flaws.

Specifications

Motif: Stars, formed by natural cream to silver-grey mineral inclusions; no etching

Size: 22.3mm × 21.5mm

Form: Near-spherical round

Material: Natural agate, deep dark brown and warm reddish-brown

Age: Ancient, estimated 1,500–2,000 years

Condition: Good overall; natural smooth-edged dimple at the equator; calcification around both drill holes; no structural cracks; both holes usable

Bloodspots: None

Product ID: Ac-101126-RS

Collection: Ancient Dzi Beads | Round Beads | Natural Agate Dzi

You May Also Like

Ancient Round Tiger Stripe and Stars Carnelian Dzi (Ac-122224-TSS)

Ancient Round Tiger Tooth Dzi (Ac-021724-TT)

Ancient Round Treasure Vase Dzi (Ac-011824-TVR)

Ancient Nine Eye Dzi with Bloodspots (Ac-B-092526-9E)

Further Reading

Natural Dzi Beads: When the Stone Writes Its Own Story

Where Do Dzi Beads Come From?

Nine unretouched photographs: five views of the sphere, two close-ups of the dimple and inclusions, and two views of the drill ends and calcification.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/7198/collections/Antique_Tibetan_Round_Treasure_Vase_Dzi_1.webp?v=1772132837
