What you see is what you receive. ✦

These two beads carry the same motif, the same age, the same provenance — and they do not look the same.

Stand them side by side as in Image 1 and the difference is immediately legible: the left bead has a medium warm brown ground, the agate's colour coming through clearly between the cream motif elements. The right bead is a full tone darker — deep dark warm brown, saturating the ground almost entirely, so that the cream star dots and divider bands emerge from a significantly deeper field. Two beads from the same era, the same maker's tradition, the same motif vocabulary — and the agate inside each one went a different way. That difference is permanent and unretouched, and it is one of the qualities that makes a matched ancient pair worth having: not that the two beads are identical, but that they share a lineage and diverge naturally from there.

The motif itself is the star (星紋 / xīng wén) — a solid filled circle, not a ring eye, not a diamond form. Eighteen of these circular stars are distributed across each bead's surface in a grid-like arrangement, organised into upper and lower zones on each face by a horizontal cream band running around the bead's equator, with a vertical cream stripe crossing it to form a cross divider. The result is four quadrant zones per bead, each carrying a cluster of star dots. The cream elements — divider bands, vertical stripes, and the star dots themselves — are all heavily stained with rust-orange-brown mineral penetration, the result of five to seven centuries of the agate chemistry working its way into the etched zones. The cream is not clean. It carries the full colour history of its age.

The form is compact and wide relative to length — a short oval barrel closer to spherical than cylindrical, at 21.1×12.0mm and 21.3×11.0mm. The drill holes visible in Images 4 and 5 are large and round relative to the bead's small body, with the characteristic profile and warm reddish-brown interior of genuine ancient hand-drilling. The surface on both beads retains a high gloss from centuries of handling, most apparent on the darker bead.

No cracks or chips observed on either bead across all five photographs. This is an independent finding.

The Star Motif

The star (星紋 / xīng wén) in the Tibetan and trans-Himalayan dzi tradition is associated with celestial wisdom and luminous guidance — the quality of being able to orient oneself even in darkness. Stars carry an association with brilliance, clarity, and the accumulation of merit across lifetimes, as well as with the protective light of the heavens watching over the wearer below. Eighteen stars — a number carrying strong auspicious resonance in Buddhist cosmology, aligning with the eighteen arhats (十八羅漢) who guard the Dharma — extend that luminous protection across a complete and specific count. A pair of eighteen-star beads doubles the field of that guidance, the two grounds holding between them the full range of what the agate itself could become.

Motif — Eighteen Star (十八星紋); solid circular star dots distributed in quadrant zones across each bead's surface; cross divider construction (horizontal equatorial band + vertical stripe)
Length — 21.1mm (Bead A) / 21.3mm (Bead B)
Diameter — 12.0mm (Bead A) / 11.0mm (Bead B)
Form — Short oval barrel; compact, near-spherical proportion
Material — Agate; Bead A: medium warm brown ground, cream-to-sandy-cream star dots and dividers with rust-brown mineral staining; Bead B: deep dark warm brown ground, same motif elements with heavier saturation
Age Estimate — Ancient, 500–700 years
Condition — No cracks or chips observed on either bead (independent finding); both beads show rust-orange-brown mineral staining of cream zones consistent with age; large ancient drill holes with warm reddish-brown interiors; high-gloss surface from centuries of handling
Bloodspots — None
Product ID — Ac-062426-18S
Collection — Ancient Dzi Beads

→ Other star motif dzi in this collection:

Ancient Three Eye Tiger Stripe Motif Carnelian Dzi Bead Rare Hexagon Shape

→ Browse the full Ancient Dzi Beads collection

→ What Are Dzi Beads?
