It is the chemistry of burial, preserved for over fifteen hundred years.

What is visible in Images 3 and 6 around the drill hole openings of Bead A is a ring of blue-green mineral crust: a deposit that forms through long-term contact between agate and the mineral-rich compounds present in burial soil — copper-bearing minerals, silicates, and carbonates that interact with the stone surface over centuries and leave their own permanent record. It is consistent with very long burial and considerable age, and it is visible in the photographs exactly as it is. Bead B carries its own record differently — a deep, rough, pervasive weathering that has softened every stripe edge and settled into every pore of the surface across its full body length. Together, these two beads have had different experiences of the same long passage of time, and both are legible.

Nineteen stripes. This is the highest stripe count of any bead in the collection — more than double the nine-stripe antique At-110223-9SBS, nearly three times the ancient seven-stripe pieces. On a bead body of 46–47mm, nineteen bands means the stripes and ground intervals between them are compressed into narrow, tightly spaced registers that give the surface a dense, ribbed character unusual in this collection. The stripes are sandy-tan to warm grey-tan in colour — not the bright white of the younger Chung dzi, but a colour that has absorbed centuries of patina — on a deep dark grey-brown to near-pitch-black ground that has itself been transformed by age and weathering until its original blackness reads now as something deeper and less uniform.

The body form of each bead is a true long cylinder — tubular, with only the slightest rounding at the ends. There is no fusiform taper. Both beads measure nearly identical lengths (46.4mm and 46.9mm) with diameters of 11.8mm and 11.6mm respectively, but they are not mechanically identical: Bead A carries heavier surface encrustation and the distinctive burial mineral deposit at its drill holes; Bead B shows slightly more surface definition in the stripe bands on its lateral faces, with its own pervasive weathering of a different character. The drill holes on both beads are large and irregularly shaped — ancient hand-drilling technique, enlarged further through centuries of cord wear at the hole edges.

The surface of both beads is entirely matte. There is no gloss remaining on either bead — not on the ground zones, not on the stripe bands. The surfaces have been transformed by time into something granular, textured, and complex: mineral deposits have settled into the stripe surfaces; the dark ground zones show rough weathering throughout. In most other Chung dzi in this collection — including the ancient seven-stripe pieces estimated at 1,000–1,500 years — some surface gloss survives. On these two beads, at over 1,500 years, it does not.

Pairs of ancient Chung dzi are rare. Numbers above nine do not follow the same cosmological symbolism as the lower counts — they are not read numerologically in the same way. Instead, high-stripe beads are valued for the density and rhythm of the composition itself — nineteen continuous circuits around each bead, giving the surface an unusually dense, ribbed character. They were not selected to match. It is a broad band of natural mineral deposit: sandy-grey to warm grey-white, rough and granular in texture, built up across the central body of each bead over centuries through contact with mineral-rich environments. Within the deposit, a thin bright white mineral line runs horizontally through the centre — the most defined line in the zone, visible on both beads across multiple photographs. The edges of the deposit are irregular — softened and uneven in the way that natural accumulation always is, as distinct from the crisp edges of an etched stripe as anything can be. The double-cone shoulder ridge is clearly visible in all lateral photographs and gives both beads a compact, angular mass that is entirely different from any elongated bead in the Chung dzi group. The drill holes at both tips are small and centrally placed; the interior drill channels show warm honey-brown to reddish-orange agate colour (confirmed in Images 8 and 9), with Bead B's warm-toned tip end — visible in Image 9 — a particularly striking contrast against its dark body exterior. The stripe lines on both beads show the softening and surface integration that five or more centuries of age produces — not sharp ruled edges but bands that have settled into the stone, their boundaries slightly blurred by the same surface crazing that covers the cream zones throughout.

That crazing is worth describing directly. Both beads show a network of fine surface cracklines running across the cream-white zones — a map of age-related surface movement in the agate, visible across every face photographed. These cracklines do not compromise structural integrity: the beads are structurally sound, and the cracklines are a surface phenomenon, not fractures through the body. On a 500–700 year old bead, this kind of surface crazing is expected and is itself a document of age.

One additional detail to disclose: one bead shows a chip or medicine dig at one end, visible in Image 5. This is a small localised surface removal at the end cap, not a crack, and does not affect the bead's structural integrity. It is disclosed here in full rather than described generically.

Image 5 also shows the drilling ends of both beads. Bead A's end cap shows a large dark colour patch surrounding the drill hole — this is natural agate colouration making the hole harder to see, not a drilling anomaly or condition issue. Bead B's drill hole is clearly visible as a small clean opening at the centre of the end cap.

The Nine Stripe Chung Dzi Motif

The Chung dzi (瓊珠) is the striped dzi — one of the oldest forms in the entire dzi tradition, predating the eye motif beads and understood as the original dzi type. The nine stripes are not nine white lines — they are nine alternating bands counted across the full sequence: the first white stripe, then a black zone, then the next white stripe, and so on, the pattern running the full length of each bead from end cap to end cap. On these two beads the stripes are cool grey-white, slightly textured and weathered at their edges in the way that distinguishes a genuine antique piece from a reproduction — not clean ruled lines but lines that have softened and shifted slightly with three to five centuries of use and handling.

The form difference between the two beads is visible and worth naming directly. Bead A (Images 2 and 4, the more tapered piece) has a pronounced asymmetric teardrop profile: one end comes to a sharper, more pointed taper while the other is rounder and more blunt. The overall silhouette is elongated and directional — it has a clear narrow end and a clear wide end. Bead B (Images 3 and 5) is more symmetrically bicone in profile, tapering toward both ends at a more even rate, with a wider central zone relative to its length. Images 6 and 7 show both beads together and make the shape difference immediately apparent: placed side by side, they read as two distinct forms despite sharing the same motif, the same ground colour, and nearly identical dimensions.

The ground on both beads is deep black, confirmed from white-background photographs across all six images. The surface on both is high gloss on the black zones, with the stripe lines carrying a finer, slightly more matte and granular texture consistent with the etching process and subsequent age. No cracks are visible on either bead. Both drill holes are small and clean, visible at the tapered ends in Images 2–5.

The Nine Stripe Chung Dzi Motif

The Chung dzi (瓊珠) is the striped dzi — one of the most fundamental forms in the entire dzi tradition, predating the eye motif beads and understood as the original dzi type. The ground surrounding each eye is the same warm sandy-cream as the outer ring itself, so the dark zones read as markings within a cream field rather than cream lines on a dark ground. Three is a number of completion across many Asian symbolic traditions, and a bead carrying three eyes is understood as a statement of that completeness: no element of fortune left unaddressed. The stripes run as horizontal bands; the wave cuts through them as a chevron-inflected line; the dot elements sit between and below, reading as stars or spot markings depending on the angle. In its original form it functioned as a marker of power and protection. The wave motif — chevron-inflected or flowing — appears across many dzi traditions as a symbol of movement, continuity, and the boundary between states. The tiger tooth form, a bold inverted-V or mountain-peak element, carries associations with strength and grounding. The left bead reads warm throughout: the stacked V-chevron motif lines are honey-gold to sandy-cream, the etching zones saturated with warmth. The right bead reads cool: the same chevron construction reads as pale blue-grey to icy white, a tone so distinctly different that the two beads look as if they came from different traditions — which they did not. They are the same motif, the same construction, the same agate ground. What differs is what the mineral chemistry of each individual stone brought to the etching field: in one bead, cinnabar warmth has saturated the cream zones and turned them golden; in the other, a different mineral expression in the agate has produced a cool, almost silvery read. Both are natural, unretouched, and entirely the stone's own work.

The motif itself is the Three Stripe Tiger — three rows of stacked inverted V-chevrons running around the full circumference of each bead, creating a repeating mountain-peak or zigzag pattern that wraps the body from top band to bottom band. The V-elements open downward and are stacked upper-middle-lower across each face, the rows dense enough that the motif covers the majority of each bead's surface. The ground between the chevron lines is a medium-dark warm brown on both beads — the difference between them is in the etching, not the ground.

The form is a tall barrel — broader at the body and gently tapered toward the top where the drill hole sits, with a rounded base that gives each bead an almost column-like proportion. At 39.7×13.8mm and 39.6×13.8mm, both beads are closely matched in dimension. The surface is high-gloss on the dark ground zones and granular-matte in the etching zones, consistent with new dzi construction.

The bloodspots are documented in the macro photograph (Image 6). Through the loupe, the etching surface reveals scattered rust-brown to warm orange cinnabar inclusions throughout the cream zones — smaller individual inclusion points distributed across the field, alongside a larger, more concentrated mass of brown mineral inclusion visible in the upper-right of the macro frame. The cinnabar (硃砂 / zhūshā, mercuric sulfide) is present as both concentrated mass and scattered individual points: a cream-zone focused distribution with a denser central cluster.

No cracks or chips observed on either bead across all six photographs.

The Three Stripe Tiger Motif

The Three Stripe Tiger motif (三條虎紋 / sān tiáo hǔ wén) belongs to the tiger tooth and stripe family — one of the most broadly auspicious groupings in the Tibetan dzi tradition. The tiger is associated with strength, courage, and the forceful removal of obstacles. The chevron/V-form used here reads in the tradition as the tiger's tooth or fang expressed as a repeating stripe — not a single isolated tooth but a continuous cascade of them, wrapping the bead in an unbroken protective pattern. Three stripes of this form hold the same triple resonance as other three-element dzi: the Three Jewels of Buddhism, the three domains of existence, and the triad of happiness, success, and longevity.

Motif — Three Stripe Tiger (三條虎紋); three rows of stacked inverted V-chevron elements wrapping full circumference; Bead A: honey-gold to sandy-cream motif lines with warm cinnabar saturation; Bead B: cool pale blue-grey to icy white motif lines
Length — 39.7mm (Bead A) / 39.6mm (Bead B)
Diameter — 13.8mm (Bead A) / 13.8mm (Bead B)
Form — Tall barrel; broad body tapering gently toward drill hole end; rounded base; both beads closely matched
Material — Agate; medium-dark warm brown ground on both beads; high-gloss dark zones; granular-matte etching zones
Age Estimate — New (within last 20 years)
Condition — No cracks or chips observed on either bead; high-gloss surface intact throughout
Bloodspots — confirmed via macro photograph (Image 6); cream-zone focused distribution with scattered rust-brown to warm orange individual cinnabar inclusions and a denser concentrated mass; cinnabar (硃砂 / zhūshā, mercuric sulfide)
Product ID — N-062426-3TSBS
Collection — New Dzi Beads | Matched Pairs

→ Other tiger motif dzi in this collection:

Vintage Six Eye & Tiger Tooth Dzi with Extreme Bloodspots, 49.1mm × 12.3mm, cinnabar-saturated sandy-peach field (V-061026-6ETTBS) — $600.00

→ Other matched pairs in this collection:

Vintage Double Wave Round Dzi Bead Pair, 20.2×17.6mm & 20.3×17.3mm, dark brown & honey-tan (V-060426-DWP) — $600.00

Double Wave Motif Pair, 20.6×18.0mm & 20.4×17.4mm, Dark Agate (V-071426-DWP3) — $600.00

→ Where Do Dzi Beads Come From?
→ What Gives Dzi Beads Their Value & What to Avoid

Every bead at Ancient Dzi Shop is photographed without retouching or digital enhancement. Against that cool agate field, the rust-red to dark orange cinnabar inclusions read at maximum contrast: warm points inside a cool stone. Bead A, the left bead, carries the same motif and nearly the same dimensions on an entirely different ground — a warm reddish-brown agate with natural internal striation visible through the high-gloss surface in Images 2 and 3. Two beads, one motif, two agate grounds so different they read as a deliberate contrast.

The motif itself is the Tiger Tooth — a single bold inverted V / mountain-peak form occupying the central body section of each bead, framed above and below by horizontal cream bands that run the full circumference. The tooth form points upward, its flanks carrying the cream motif lines in a sandy-cream to pale cream tone on both beads, though warmer and more golden on Bead A and cooler and paler on Bead B. The construction is clean and direct — no secondary elements, no wave or eye additions, just the single tooth in its classic form between two banding lines.

The bloodspots are documented in Image 6, a macro loupe photograph of Bead B's etching zone. What is visible is a pervasive constellation of individual rust-red to dark orange-red cinnabar pinpoints — discrete, clearly individual inclusions scattered at high density across the full cream field, with a denser central concentration where the dot count is highest. These are not surface marks. They are natural inclusions within the agate, and they are present throughout the cream zones of both beads, expressing as warmth in Bead A's motif lines and as the vivid contra-colour in Bead B's macro. As on any bead, new or old, real bloodspots cannot be added — they come from the stone.

A small surface mark is visible on Bead B's body in Image 4, disclosed here as found. No cracks or chips observed on either bead across all six photographs.

The Tiger Tooth Motif

The Tiger Tooth dzi (虎牙天珠 / hǔ yá tiānzhū) — also known as Tasso or Horse Tooth — is one of the oldest and most widely recognised single-element dzi forms. The tiger in Tibetan and Himalayan tradition is the embodiment of raw strength, fearlessness, and the power to overcome whatever stands in the path. The tooth — the tiger's most direct instrument of force — concentrated as a single motif element on the body of an agate bead carries that attribute in focused form. The Tasso bead is traditionally worn or carried by those seeking courage in difficult circumstances, strength in times of physical or emotional challenge, and the fierce protective energy that the tiger represents in the iconographic tradition.

Motif — Tiger Tooth (虎牙天珠, Tasso); single inverted V/mountain-peak tooth element; horizontal band dividers above and below; Bead A: warm sandy-cream motif lines on warm reddish-brown ground; Bead B: pale cream motif lines on cool blue-grey ground
Length — 39.4mm (Bead A) / 39.5mm (Bead B)
Diameter — 13.6mm (Bead A) / 13.7mm (Bead B)
Form — Tall barrel; broad body tapering toward drill hole end; rounded base; both beads closely matched in proportion
Material — Agate; Bead A: warm reddish-brown with natural internal striation visible through gloss surface; Bead B: cool blue-grey to brownish-grey with natural colour variation at drill hole zone; high-gloss on both
Age Estimate — New (within last 20 years)
Condition — No cracks or chips observed on either bead; small surface mark on Bead B mid-body (Image 4) disclosed; natural agate colour variation at Bead B drill hole zone is geological, not damage
Bloodspots — Prominent, documented in macro loupe photograph (Image 6); dense individual rust-red to dark orange-red cinnabar pinpoints throughout the cream zone with denser central concentration; cinnabar (硃砂 / zhūshā, mercuric sulfide)
Product ID — N-062426-TTBS
Collection — New Dzi | Bloodspot Dzi | Pairs & Sets

→ Sibling tiger pair in this collection:

New Three Stripe Tiger Dzi Pair with Bloodspots (N-062426-3TSBS)

→ Other tiger motif dzi in this collection:

V-061026-6ETTBS — Vintage Six Eye & Tiger Tooth Dzi with Bloodspots, 49.1×12.3mm

New Pair of Round Tiger Tooth Dzi Beads with Extreme Bloodspots

→ Other matched pairs in this collection:

Pair of Ancient Eighteen Star Agate Dzi (Ac-062426-18S)

Vintage Round Double Wave Dzi Pair (V-071426-DWP3)

→ Bloodspots on Dzi Beads: What Cinnabar Dots Are
→ How to Choose a Dzi Bead

Every bead at Ancient Dzi Shop is photographed without retouching or digital enhancement. These three beads do something different. The ground across all three is warm honey-brown to caramel-orange, and the eye rings are a sandy golden-tan — close enough in tone to the ground that the eye doesn't announce itself immediately. It resolves slowly, the ring emerging from the surrounding field rather than sitting on top of it. The natural agate banding within each bead adds a further layer: what reads at first glance as texture around the eye rings is the stone's own internal striation — bands of slightly different tone within the same warm colour family, all smooth to the touch, all part of how this agate formed.

The three beads are not identical in colour. The middle bead carries the deepest, richest tone — a warm chocolate-brown that reads darker than its two companions throughout. The left bead is warmer honey-caramel; the right bead shifts toward a slightly cooler tone with more visible grey-white accent banding in the agate, particularly at the eye zones visible in Images 4 and 5. Each bead has three eyes distributed one per face across the full circumference — the eye is always present regardless of orientation, the concentric ring construction consistent across all three beads and all nine faces.

Images 5 and 6 show the drilling ends. The end caps are warm chocolate-brown to deep caramel, smooth and glossy, with small clean drill holes centred on each end. The end cap colour is deeper than the body on all three beads — a natural characteristic of this agate's internal colour distribution.

No cracks, chips, or surface marks are visible in any of the five photographs.

These are new beads, crafted within the last twenty years from genuine natural agate — not antique, not ancient, not faux-antique in design intent. Three eyes distributed across the full circumference of the bead mean the motif is active from every direction — there is no face that faces away. These two beads work entirely differently. The cream criss-cross lines run diagonally in two directions simultaneously across every inch of each bead's surface, their intersections so densely packed that the dark triangular voids between them read not as ground but as negative space caught inside the lattice. The motif is not on the bead — it is the bead. Turn either piece to any angle and the same interlocking diagonal pattern continues without break or blank zone.

The two beads carry this shared coverage pattern on grounds at opposite ends of the same spectrum. Bead A (visible in Images 2–4) has deep warm dark brown triangular voids with a distinct burgundy undertone — the carnelian's natural deep reddish-brown visible inside each diamond void. Bead B (Images 5–7) is darker throughout, its ground reading as very deep near-black, the warm undertone only faintly present and the cream lines reading with notably higher contrast against the deeper field. Same motif, same coverage density, same dimensions within 0.3mm — and still two different stones.

The cream criss-cross lines have a rough, granular, heavily weathered texture throughout both beads — the etching surface has mineralised and partially reintegrated with the surrounding carnelian over five to seven centuries, giving the lines a raised, almost encrusted quality visible across all six photographs. This texture is consistent with considerable age in an etched carnelian bead.

The form is an elongated narrow cylinder — slender at 9.1mm diameter, long at 49.2mm and 48.9mm, with a gentle taper at both ends and the small centred drill holes of ancient hand-drilling visible at the tips. The resulting lattice creates a net-like enclosure interpreted across traditions as a protective weave — a bead whose surface leaves no opening through which harm or misfortune might pass. The dense triangular voids between the lines are the ground made visible by the motif's total coverage: not background but interior space, caught and held within the crossing lines.

Motif — Criss-Cross lattice (交叉紋); continuous all-over diagonal crossing-line pattern with no blank surface; dense triangular dark voids between cream lines; full coverage from end cap to end cap
Length — 49.2mm (Bead A) / 48.9mm (Bead B)
Diameter — 9.1mm (Bead A) / 9.1mm (Bead B)
Form — Elongated narrow cylinder; gentle taper at both ends; closely matched in proportion
Material — Carnelian; Bead A: deep warm dark brown to burgundy-brown triangular voids, warm undertone throughout; Bead B: very deep near-black triangular voids, higher contrast against cream lines; both beads show heavily weathered, granular cream motif lines with mineralised edge texture
Age Estimate — Ancient, 500–700 years
Condition — No cracks or structural damage observed on either bead; heavily weathered cream etching consistent with age; surface roughness at end cap tip zones consistent with ancient age; carnelian surface semi-gloss to matte
Bloodspots — None
Product ID — Ac-062426-CCX
Collection — Carnelian Dzi | Ancient Dzi

→ Other ancient carnelian dzi in this collection:

Twelve X-Cross Motif Ancient Carnelian Dzi, 28.5×11.0mm, Octagonal (Ac-062426-12X) — $600.00

Ancient Four Rail Track Carnelian Dzi, 28.9mm × 11.2mm, terracotta-red, octagonal form (Ac-010825-4RT) — $700.00

Ancient Twin Tiger Stripe & Tiger Tooth Carnelian Dzi, 26.5mm × 13.5mm, bicolour terracotta-red and deep grey-black agate, octagonal (Ac-061126-TSTT) — $1,000.00

→ Where Do Dzi Beads Come From?

Every bead at Ancient Dzi Shop is photographed without retouching or digital enhancement. These two beads reverse that relationship: the cream-white agate is the dominant element on every face, and the deep chocolate-brown tiger tooth forms sit within it as bold markings rather than lines on a dark base. The upper tooth on each face is a broad, upward-pointing V-chevron that spans the full width of the bead's body, its two wings meeting at a central peak. A narrow horizontal stripe band runs across the equator. Below it, a second tooth mirrors the first — pointing downward, the same broad V-form, the same dark chocolate-brown against the cream field. The composition is symmetrical and contained: two teeth, one stripe, nothing else on the face, and the cream ground filling everything between and around them.

The dark zones across both beads are deep chocolate-brown — warm in tone, consistent throughout, without the cool undertone that would suggest a different production era or stone type. Bead A (left in Images 2–4) has a slightly brighter, more clearly white cream field; Bead B reads with a marginally cooler, very slightly grey-tinged cream — the difference is subtle but visible when both beads are photographed together under the same lighting, as Images 2, 3, and 4 show. Both beads are compact barrel-oval in form, wider at the centre and gently rounded at the shoulders, the proportions sitting comfortably between a true barrel and a bicone.

Images 5 and 6 show the drilling ends of both beads. Bead A's end cap shows a warm honey-tan ring surrounding the drill hole — a natural agate colour variation at the tip. Bead B's end cap is cooler cream-white with a warm-toned ring of its own, slightly more orange in tone than Bead A's. These are natural agate variations between the two beads, consistent with Taiwan production from this period, where no two pieces from the same batch are ever quite identical in their internal colour distribution. They carry approximately forty years of age and the quiet surface character that four decades of handling produces: a gloss that has settled rather than been applied, and motif edges that have softened very slightly from their original sharpness without losing their definition.

The Double Tiger Tooth Motif

The tiger tooth (虎牙, hǔ yá) is one of the most direct and legible motifs in the dzi vocabulary — a bold inverted-V or mountain-peak form associated with the strength, courage, and protective power of the tiger in Tibetan and Chinese symbolic tradition. The double tiger tooth places two of these elements on opposing faces of the bead, one pointing upward and one pointing downward, with a horizontal stripe band at the equator creating a clear compositional division between them. The result is a bead that reads differently from its top half and its bottom half — the upper tooth confrontational and outward-pointing, the lower tooth grounding and stable — while remaining unified by the single stripe running between them. In Tibetan belief, tiger tooth dzi are worn for strength, the dispelling of fear, and the cultivation of personal courage. A matched pair amplifies these qualities, the two beads understood as a balanced and mutually reinforcing statement.

Spec Block

Motif: Double Tiger Tooth (雙虎牙 / Shuāng Hǔ Yá) — two bold V-chevron tiger tooth elements on opposing faces; single horizontal stripe band at equator; cream-white dominant ground; deep chocolate-brown motif zones
Length: 14.8mm (both beads)
Diameter: 12.2mm (Bead A); 12.1mm (Bead B)
Form: Compact barrel-oval pair; rounded shoulders; flat end caps; wider at centre
Material: Agate — cream-white dominant ground; deep chocolate-brown motif zones; natural colour variation at end caps between the two beads
Age Estimate: Vintage — Taiwan production, 1980s; approximately 40 years old
Condition: No cracks, chips, or surface marks visible in any photograph. The vertical bar lines radiating from the equatorial band — the sun rays — are thick, bumpy, and mineralised at their edges, the original etched surface broken down and rebuilt by the chemistry of the agate over more than a thousand years. They do not read as lines drawn on a surface. They read as formations that have grown out of the stone. This is one of the most physically distinctive age markers a dzi can carry: the motif and the material have become, at their boundary, the same thing.

The two beads carry this shared character differently. Bead A (right bead in Image 2, also shown in Images 3 and 4) has a warm chocolate-brown body, its sun ray bars reading as sandy-cream against that warmer ground. The end cap visible in Image 4 darkens considerably toward the drill hole — the agate's own saturation deepening at the tip to a near-black zone, giving Bead A a two-tone quality from body to end. Bead B (left bead in Image 2, shown in Images 5 and 6) is a full tone darker across the entire body — a deep dark warm brown approaching black throughout, so that its cream motif bars carry far greater contrast. In Images 5 and 6, the raised texture of the cream elements reads almost like lichen against a dark stone, the surface relief of twelve centuries of mineral activity fully legible from normal viewing distance. Both beads share the same small, centred drill holes characteristic of ancient hand-drilling at this age.

A fine surface line is visible on Bead A near the upper equatorial band in Image 2, disclosed here as found. As sun rays, the radiating vertical lines represent the all-encompassing reach of solar wisdom and protection, the beads understood as holding and transmitting that energy to the wearer. As rail tracks, the structured regularity of the lines is associated with continuous forward movement and sustained progress — a path that does not turn, built span by span. The macro photo shows the cream-white zone at close range: a field of vivid orange-red to brick-red pinpoint dots across the whole pale ground, individual and distinct, sitting within the stone just below the surface. These are natural cinnabar (硃砂, zhūshā) inclusions within the agate. No cracks or chips are visible from any of the seven photo angles.

These are new beads, crafted within the last 20 years from natural agate using the traditional dzi crafting technique.

The Tiger Tooth Motif

The tiger tooth (tasso) is one of the foundational dzi motifs, representing the strength, protection, and grounded courage of the tiger, one of the Four Dignities in Tibetan symbolism. The bold diagonal banding is believed to guard the wearer and lend inner strength. On round beads the motif wraps the entire surface, offering its protection from every direction. It spirals around it.

The motif on each of these three beads is the same: two interlocking wave bands in deep dark grey-brown to near-black, running the full length of the barrel in a continuous diagonal movement that wraps rather than crosses. The ground between the wave bands is warm sandy-cream to honey-tan, the dominant element on every face, so the dark waves read as bold markings within a pale field. The combination is graphic and high-contrast.

The three beads share the same colour relationship but not the same colour distribution. The warm brown tone that runs through each bead, in the wave zones, the end caps, and the transitions between cream and dark, does not always behave uniformly from one end to the other. On some beads it starts darker at one tip and softens toward the other; the middle bead carries the deepest, most consistent dark brown. These are natural agate variations, and they give the set a quiet internal variety that shows when the three are side by side, as Images 2 and 3 show clearly.

The end caps on all three are warm honey-brown to chocolate-brown, warmer and darker than the cream-dominant body, and the drill holes are small and cleanly centred. All three beads are elongated fusiform barrels, 37.5–39.4mm long and 10.8–11.6mm in diameter, with a high-gloss surface. No cracks, chips, or surface marks are visible in the photographs.

These are new beads, crafted within the last twenty years from natural agate using the traditional dzi crafting technique. They are not antique or ancient, and not finished to look old: three straightforward new dzi with a clean, high-contrast double wave motif and the warmth of natural honey-tan agate behind it.

The Double Wave Motif

The double wave (雙波紋, shuāng bō wén) in Tibetan dzi tradition symbolises the continuous, self-renewing flow of positive energy and fortune. Two waves meeting and interlocking represent the union of complementary forces, movement and rest, giving and receiving, resolved into one balanced rhythm. On an elongated barrel, the diagonal wrapping of the waves gives the motif a particular energy: the lines never stop, simply continuing around the body of the bead. Wave dzi are worn for harmony, continuity, and the easing of obstacles. Rotate the bead and a new vase comes into view as the previous one curves away. The photographs in this listing capture four distinct faces across the two beads, and across those four angles the Treasure Vase motif reads differently each time: full-face with the classic Bumpa silhouette centred and clear; partial-face with the vase neck and handles just visible at the edge; equatorial view where the organic cream lattice connecting the four vases dominates; and the drill-hole pole, where the lattice converges and the form reveals itself as a globe held together by a continuous network of cream lines.

This pair is distinguished from others in this collection by the depth of the ground colour. The agate on both beads carries a dark tone — not the lighter warm brown of earlier Taiwan pieces, but a deep, near-black dark brown that gives the cream motif lines exceptional contrast. The cream itself has a slightly golden warmth rather than a stark white — a characteristic of the natural agate used in quality Taiwan vintage production, and a quality that becomes more pronounced as the beads age and patinate. Both beads show honest surface weathering: micro-texture, fine pitting, and the gentle matte irregularity that distinguishes natural aged agate from the glassy uniformity of modern reproductions.

The two beads are not identical — nor should they be. Bead 1 measures 20.5mm × 17.4mm; Bead 2 measures 20.9mm × 18.1mm. Both are slightly oval rather than perfectly spherical, with a gentle egg-like profile that is characteristic of hand-crafted round dzi rather than machine-produced spheres. The surfaces of the two beads carry slightly different weathering character — Bead 1 shows more pronounced surface texture and micro-pitting; Bead 2 presents a slightly smoother face. Together they read as a matched pair: same motif, same palette, same origin, same intent — with the minor individual differences that confirm they are genuine objects rather than factory duplicates.

The Treasure Vase Motif — known in Tibetan as Bumpa (བུམ་པ) — is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. The vessel is understood as inexhaustible: a container that never empties, overflowing continuously with wealth, health, and blessings. In dzi practice, the Treasure Vase bead is worn or placed with the intention of attracting abundance across multiple dimensions simultaneously — material prosperity, physical wellbeing, and the removal of obstacles to good fortune. The motif is also known as the Medicine Vase, with particular emphasis on healing and longevity.

Taiwan vintage dzi from this era is recognised by serious collectors and Tibetan Buddhist communities worldwide as the highest quality non-antique dzi produced. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

These two beads are almost perfectly round, and on a round form the double wave does something it cannot do on an elongated barrel — it wraps.

Every double wave dzi in this collection is an elongated barrel: At-052526-DW3 at 48.7mm, At-052526-DW4 at 47.4mm, At-072325-DW5 at 28.4mm, and the ancient Ac-082524-DWBS at 35.4mm. All four carry the wave horizontally across a long axis. This pair — V-060426-DWP — presents the same double wave motif on a near-spherical form, and the difference is fundamental. There is no long axis to anchor the composition. The honey-tan wave bands curve continuously over the surface of each bead, meeting at the drill hole on each end rather than terminating at a flat end cap. The wave does not travel from one point to another — it orbits.

Each bead shows two horizontal wave bands running across its equator, separated by a deep dark chocolate-brown centre band. Where the two waves meet at the sides of each bead, they pinch together to form the characteristic double wave diamond lozenge — the same geometric compression seen in At-052526-DW3, here condensed onto a spherical canvas. The upper wave crests upward and the lower wave troughs downward, the dark ground filling above and below. The drill hole faces (Images 4 and 5) reveal how the honey-tan bands sweep organically around the curve of each bead and converge at the hole — a composition that could only be read on a round form.

The motif lines are a warm honey-tan — golden in tone, distinctly warmer than the cream lines on the elongated double wave beads in the collection. Against the deep dark chocolate-brown ground they read as warm and luminous rather than high-contrast. The dark zones carry visible surface micro-crackle and age texture throughout — the characteristic surface character of vintage Taiwan dzi production from the 1980s, consistent with the known origin of this pair. Both beads are glossy overall with this fine surface texture giving them a lived quality distinct from new production.

The two beads are closely matched: 20.2mm × 17.6mm and 20.3mm × 17.3mm — nearly identical in profile, colour, and wave layout. Minor natural variation in wave line weight and dark zone distribution between the two is visible on close inspection and is expected in hand-etched pairs of this type. They were made together and read as a pair. Another round vintage pair in the collection is V-052526-TVP — the Treasure Vase pair at 20.5mm × 17.4mm and 20.9mm × 18.1mm — which shares the same round form and Taiwan origin but carries a completely different motif and slightly deeper, cooler dark ground. This pair is the double wave equivalent: same era, same form, different symbolic register.

No bloodspots are present on either bead.

The Double Wave (雙波/Shuāng Bō) Motif

The double wave — known in Tibetan dzi tradition as a symbol of flowing life force, continuity, and the cyclical nature of existence — is among the most elemental of dzi motifs. Where eye beads count and accumulate, the wave simply moves. It has no beginning and no end on a circular form, which makes the round double wave bead a particularly complete expression of the motif's core meaning: the endless, self-renewing movement of energy through the world. In Tibetan belief, wave dzi are worn for harmony, flow, and the easing of obstacles — their fluid lines understood as a counterforce to stagnation and blockage. A matched pair amplifies this quality, the two beads understood as a balanced pair of forces in continuous motion.

Spec Block

Motif: Double Wave (雙波/Shuāng Bō); two wave bands meeting at diamond lozenge on each face; wrapping continuously over spherical form Length: 20.2mm (Bead A); 20.3mm (Bead B) Diameter: 17.6mm (Bead A); 17.3mm (Bead B) Form: Near-spherical round; honey-tan wave bands wrapping continuously over surface; drill hole at each pole Material: Deep dark chocolate-brown agate ground; warm honey-tan motif wave lines Age Estimate: Approximately 40–50 years (Taiwan, 1980s production) Condition: No cracks; visible surface micro-crackle and age texture consistent with vintage Taiwan production; glossy surface intact Bloodspots: None Product ID: V-060426-DWP Collection: Vintage Dzi Collection | All Products

You May Also Like

Vintage Round Treasure Vase Dzi Bead Pair, 20.5–20.9mm, Dark Agate, Taiwan (V-052526-TVP) — $600.00

New Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 57.8 × 12.6mm, very dark brown agate, honey-brown end caps (N-062226-DW3) — $200.00

Antique Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead — (At-0426-DW2) — $500.00

Antique Double Wave Dzi Bead, 28.4mm × 10.6mm, Compact Form, Natural Agate (At-072325-DW5) — $1,300.00

Ancient Double Wave Dzi with Extreme Bloodspots, brilliant white & pitch-black agate, 35.4mm × 14.0mm, 500–700 yrs (Ac-082524-DWBS) — $6,000.00

Blog Links

Taiwan Dzi Beads: A Guide to 1980s Vintage Dzi

Dzi Bead Motifs and Their Meanings

A matched pair of round double wave dzi — the same motif that runs through the entire collection, now orbiting instead of travelling.

We never retouch our photos. It is what three to five centuries of mineral chemistry does to a calcification band deposited in the central zone of a natural agate bead. The stripe began as a bright mineral accumulation; it has been slowly absorbing the chemistry of the agate and the environment around it, and the photographs show it in its current state: a wide, granular, cool grey-white band that reads differently in different light, sometimes closer to cream, sometimes clearly grey. It will continue to change. What you see is a bead in process — which is what every genuine antique piece is.

The form is a clean bicone: two equal conical halves tapering from the equatorial stripe band to small, well-centred drill holes at each pole. This is the classic Chung dzi single-stripe body, and in this pair the proportions are almost perfectly matched — 15.7×11.5mm and 15.8×11.5mm, a difference of a single tenth of a millimetre in length. At 11.5mm in diameter against just under 16mm in length, these are compact and rounded in overall silhouette, with the bicone taper only becoming apparent when the beads are viewed from the end.

The two beads are not identical in ground colour, and that difference is part of what makes the pair visually coherent rather than repetitive. Bead A carries a warm reddish-brown on its upper cone and a deep, substantially darker tone on its lower cone — the colour shift is visible in Image 1 and confirmed from the end views in Images 2 and 3. The upper shoulder of Bead A also shows a faint blue-grey sheen in the photographs, a phenomenon occasionally observed in ancient and antique agate where the internal light refraction through the stone produces a cool optical overtone at the surface. Bead B is more tonally uniform across both cones — a consistent warm dark reddish-brown throughout, with natural agate banding faintly visible through the body in the end-face photographs. Both beads carry a high-gloss surface on their brown agate zones, contrasting directly with the matte-granular texture of the greying stripe band. This surface contrast — gloss against matte, brown against grey-white — is what makes the single-stripe Chung dzi composition legible from any distance.

The stripe on each bead occupies the full equatorial width — a wide central band rather than a narrow accent, giving each bead a substantial visual weight at its centre that the tapering cones then resolve at both ends. No bloodspot inclusions are detected in any photograph. No chips, cracks, medicine digs, or surface damage are present.

In this collection, the natural calcification single-stripe category includes At-020726-Chung — a short wide fusiform with a single dark band on an ivory-cream ground — and the ancient bicone pair Ac-061526-1SPair, where one bead is pale grey-white and one is deep dark grey-brown. At-081123-1SPair differs from both: where At-020726-Chung is a single bead with a dark band on a light ground, these two beads have a light band on a dark ground, and the pair format gives them a doubled presence neither individual bead could produce alone. Where Ac-061526-1SPair presents as maximum tonal contrast between the two beads, this antique pair reads as tonal variation within the same warm-brown family — more intimate, more closely matched.

The Single Stripe Chung Dzi Motif 單條紋瓊珠

The single stripe Chung dzi (單條紋瓊珠, dān tiáowén qióng zhū) is one of the most reduced forms in the entire dzi tradition — a single band crossing the equator of the bead, dividing it into two equal halves. In Tibetan and broader Himalayan usage, this division is understood as the boundary between opposites: above and below, heaven and earth, visible and invisible, manifest and unmanifest. The single stripe does not elaborate or decorate — it simply marks the place where two things meet. This austerity is its strength. Chung dzi of this type have been used as anchor beads in multi-bead compositions, as meditation objects whose simplicity makes them easier to hold in sustained attention, and as protective pieces whose power is understood to reside precisely in what they do not say. A bead that holds one line holds a complete statement.

Spec Block

Motif: Single Stripe Chung Dzi 單條紋瓊珠 (dān tiáowén qióng zhū); What you see is what ships.

Turn either of these beads and the vase shifts — what reads as a wide-shouldered vessel from one angle becomes a chalice or trophy from the opposite side, the same cream lines reorganising into a different silhouette as the bead rotates in the hand.

These two round dzi were made in Taiwan in the 1980s, using the same crafting tradition as the vintage round double wave pairs listed in this shop — the same style of cream etching on a dark agate ground, the same rounded ovoid form, the same quality of line work that characterises this period of Taiwan dzi production. The motif is a treasure vase variant: the classic bumpa form, rendered here with a distinctive rounded top and wide-shouldered body that gives each face of the bead a slightly different reading depending on the orientation.

The ground on both beads is a deep, rich dark brown — confirmed from the white-background photos. The two beads share this ground tone but differ in surface character. Bead A (20.7×18.3mm) carries a slightly warmer surface, with fine natural texture visible across the dark zones and a warm brown cast at the inner edges of the cream lines. Bead B (20.1×17.7mm) presents a smoother, more uniform surface, and the cream lines are crisper at their centres — cooler in tone, with warm brown appearing only at the immediate boundary where cream meets dark ground. Side by side, this difference is subtle but consistent across all angles.

From the end-drill views, the cream lines of the motif extend around the full equator of each bead, forming large lobed zones that divide the dark ground in a pattern quite different from what any single face-on view would suggest. Rotating either bead slowly reveals the full composition — a continuous cream network wrapping the entire surface.

Both beads are in good condition. The fine surface texture on Bead A is a natural characteristic of the agate and its age, not damage. The drill openings on both are clean and consistent with vintage Taiwan production. Each bead is slightly ovoid rather than perfectly spherical — a natural feature of this form and period.

The Treasure Vase Motif

The treasure vase — bumpa in Tibetan — is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism and one of the most enduring motifs in dzi tradition. It is the vessel of abundance: an inexhaustible source of wealth, health, and all that is wished for. On dzi beads the treasure vase motif is associated with the fulfilment of wishes, the removal of obstacles, and the sustaining of good fortune. A pair amplifies this symbolism — two vessels together are understood in the Tibetan tradition as a doubling of the auspicious energy, and as an expression of completeness.

Spec Block

Motif: Treasure Vase Variant
Diameter × Height: 18.3×20.7mm (Bead A) | 17.7×20.1mm (Bead B)
Form: Round (ovoid)
Material: Agate
Age Estimate: Vintage — 1980s Taiwan production
Condition: Good — fine natural surface texture on Bead A consistent with age; no chips or cracks observed from available photos on either bead
Bloodspots: None
Product ID: V-071426-TVV
Collection: New & Vintage Dzi | Taiwan Dzi | Round Beads | Pairs & Sets

Its companion pieces:

Vintage Round Treasure Vase Dzi Bead Pair, 20.5–20.9mm, Dark Agate, Taiwan (V-052526-TVP) — $600.00

Vintage Double Wave Round Dzi Bead Pair, 20.2×17.6mm & 20.3×17.3mm, dark brown & honey-tan (V-060426-DWP) — $600.00

For treasure vase motif in antique barrel form, see:

Antique Two Eye & Treasure Vase Dzi Bead, 30.2 × 10.9mm, dark brown agate fusiform (At-062226-2ETV2) — $1,200.00

Further reading:

Taiwan Dzi Beads: A Guide to 1980s Vintage Dzi

Dzi Bead Motifs and Their Meanings

All photos are unretouched. The wave bands wrap the entire surface of each bead — there is no single fixed face, no top or bottom, only the continuous composition of two undulating cream-pale bands against the dark ground that presents differently at every rotation. From the body-shot angles, the waves read as two parallel horizontal undulating lines running around the equator. From the drill-end angles, the same waves resolve into large sweeping arcs that divide each pole into curved segments of dark and pale. The composition is the same in both cases; the reading is entirely different.

The two beads share the double wave motif and the same 1980s Taiwan crafting tradition but carry distinct colour characters. Bead A (20.6×18.0mm) has a very deep dark brown ground that deepens toward near-black in its darkest zones, with wave bands in a slightly cooler cream-pale tone. The drill pole on Bead A is deep dark, approaching the darkest tone present anywhere on the piece. Bead B (20.4×17.4mm) carries a warmer dark brown ground — distinctly browner in character — with wave bands in a slightly warmer honey-cream tone. The drill pole on Bead B is dark brown rather than the deeper tone of Bead A's pole. Side by side the distinction is consistent: Bead A reads cooler and deeper; Bead B reads warmer throughout.

Both beads are in good condition. In the Tibetan tradition the wave motif also connects to water and its qualities: adaptability, persistence, and the capacity to sustain life across all conditions. A pair of double wave beads amplifies this symbolism — two beads, each carrying two waves, create a set of four flowing elements that together express completeness and unobstructed movement in all directions.

Spec Block

Motif: Double Wave
Diameter × Height: 18.0×20.6mm (Bead A) | 17.4×20.4mm (Bead B)
Form: Round (slightly ovoid)
Material: Agate
Age Estimate: Vintage — 1980s Taiwan production
Condition: Good — fine age-consistent surface marks on both beads; no chips or cracks observed from available photos
Bloodspots: None
Product ID: V-071426-DWP3
Collection: New & Vintage Dzi | Taiwan Dzi | Round Beads | Pairs & Sets

Its companion pieces — Round Double Wave family:

Antique Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead — (At-0426-DW2) — $500.00

Vintage Double Wave Round Dzi Bead Pair, 20.2×17.6mm & 20.3×17.3mm, dark brown & honey-tan (V-060426-DWP) — $600.00

For double wave in antique barrel form, see the Antique Dzi collection.

Further reading:

Taiwan Dzi Beads: A Guide to 1980s Vintage Dzi

Dzi Bead Motifs and Their Meanings

All photos are unretouched. Hold these beads by the drill axis and the vase reads clearly — neck and rim rising toward the drill hole, the swelling body below, scrollwork curling out from the sides. Every angle shows a different part of the same motif.

The two beads share the motif, the 1980s Taiwan origin and a dark brown ground, but differ in tone.
