Antique Tibetan Five-Eye Dzi Bead — 48.9 mm, Dark Brown, Black & Cream, 200–400 Years (AT-100926-5E2)
We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
This bead shares its eye count and general composition with another five-eye piece listed separately in the collection, but the two beads are distinct in almost every other respect. Where that piece works in warm dark brown with open, flowing wave connectors, this one is darker and denser: the ground shifts between dark brown and black across the four faces, and the wave motif on the alternating faces is far more tightly stacked — multiple layers of scalloped cream lines compressed into each face, creating a richer and more complex visual field. The overall impression is heavier and more architecturally resolved, the waves occupying the full face rather than floating as open horizontal lines.
Five eyes distribute across two long faces in the same three-two arrangement as the companion piece, but the treatment of each eye face is different here. The three-eye face carries its eyes at the lower register, each ring sitting just above a cream base line, with a continuous scalloped cloud-wave running above them — the cream tops of the eye rings merging organically into the undulating wave above, so that the eyes and the wave above them read as a single integrated composition rather than separate elements. The two-eye face encloses its pair within a defined rectangular cream frame, the top edge of which is itself scalloped in the same cloud-wave pattern — two eyes contained within a bordered panel whose upper boundary dissolves into wave.
The wave faces carry four to five stacked horizontal scalloped lines — more layers than the companion piece — with a flat cream band at the base of each face grounding the composition. The scallops are consistent in size and rhythm, the cream lines clearly defined against the dark ground, the channels between them narrow and dark. The overall effect is of a densely patterned surface that reads as continuous movement across the full length of each wave face.
The ground colour throughout is a deep dark brown-black — darker than the companion piece, with the black more assertive in the body zones and the brown appearing in the end cap areas, where both tips open into a distinctly warmer brown tone visible in the angled end photographs. Both drill holes are small and clean. Surface condition is excellent throughout. No cracks or chips are present on any face.
The Five-Eye Dzi
Five is associated in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology with the five Dhyani Buddhas — the five celestial buddhas who embody the five aspects of enlightened wisdom — and with the five directions: the four cardinal points plus the centre. A five-eye dzi is traditionally understood to invoke the blessings of all five Dhyani Buddhas simultaneously, bringing together their five wisdoms into a single object. The bead is held to confer good fortune, eliminate the five poisons of the mind, and create conditions for the wearer's spiritual development. The cloud-wave motif connecting the eyes on this bead carries additional significance in Tibetan dzi tradition: cloud and water forms are associated with the continuous flow of merit, the movement of blessing through all realms, and the dissolving of obstacles across time.
