The face with no eye on it is the one that stops you first.
Turn this bead to its wave connector face and there is no eye in sight — just a broad, bold, undulating white band that fills the entire field from stripe to stripe, arching in three separate curves across the dark ground. It reads more like weather than motif. Then turn it a quarter, and the single central eye appears. Another quarter, and there are two. Another quarter, and you are back to a different connector face — this one more architectural, with horizontal bands and partial arc elements stacked below the eye zones from the faces on either side. Four faces, three different compositions, and the one with the most visual presence carries no eye at all.
The three eyes themselves are distributed asymmetrically: one eye sits centred on its face alone, flanked by double cross-bar stripe dividers on either side; the other two share a face, also flanked by stripes, sitting side by side with their pupils reading as two distinct closed rings. The 1-and-2 arrangement means the bead has no axis of symmetry — there is no face that mirrors any other face on this bead.
The ground shifts across the bead's surface in a way that is visible clearly in the white-background photographs. The end zones and tapered tips are very deep dark warm brown, approaching black, with the underlying agate almost completely saturated at the extremities. As the eye moves toward the central body, the ground opens into a noticeably warmer, lighter medium-dark brown where the natural agate tone bleeds through. The motif lines are off-white to cream throughout, with a granular matte texture in the etched zones — slightly rough to the eye, consistent with new dzi construction. Where the cream lines border the warmer agate zones, a honey-brown warmth bleeds into the edge of the etching, most visible on the right-hand stripe divider in Image 2.
No cracks, chips, or surface damage observed in any of the six photographs. This is an independent finding.
The Three Eye Motif
The Three Eye dzi (三眼天珠) is associated in Tibetan tradition with the wealth deity Kubera — the guardian of the north and the lord of riches in both Hindu and Buddhist cosmological frameworks. Three eyes are understood to see simultaneously into the three domains of existence: past, present, and future. In practical devotional use, the three-eye dzi is among the most commonly sought for its association with material prosperity, abundance, and the removal of obstacles to wealth. The number three also aligns with the Three Jewels of Buddhism — the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha — giving the motif a dual resonance across both the devotional and the cosmological registers.
