Look closely at the surface of this bead under magnification and it isn't smooth: small circular pits and texture marks are scattered across the dark ground, natural surface wear rather than applied colour or a flaw in the work.

This is a vintage dzi bead crafted in Taiwan in the 1980s using the traditional dzi crafting technique, the same method of etching natural agate used for ancient dzi. The ground is a deep dark brown across all six white-background rotation photos, with cream-white eye rings and connecting stripes in high, even contrast.

The bead is a classic barrel, drilled through the centre. One face centres a single eye framed by plain vertical stripes at both ends; turning the bead reveals a second face where the connecting line breaks from the stripe pattern, tracing a stepped, right-angled path instead. This bead rewards handling and turning rather than a single fixed view. The translucent brown gloss visible at the drilled end shows the natural agate.

No cracks are visible anywhere on this bead. Under magnification, the surface shows fine natural pitting, a texture feature rather than damage. There are no bloodspots on this piece.

The Two Eye Motif

The Two Eye motif is traditionally associated with good relations at home and at work: harmony between partners, and harmony among colleagues. On this piece the motif shifts from face to face, a single eye with plain stripes on one side and a stepped connecting line on the other, giving the bead two very different characters.
