Look closely at the stepped brown lines connecting each eye on this bead. They don't travel in straight paths; they turn corners, tracing a right-angled path across the cream ground like a maze cut into stone.

This is a vintage dzi bead crafted in Taiwan in the 1980s using the traditional dzi crafting technique, the same method of etching natural agate used for ancient dzi. It carries over four decades of age. The ground is a warm cream-white, and it is the dominant surface rather than a backdrop: the dark brown motif sits within it. That dark brown is truly brown, not black, a warm chocolate tone consistent across the etched squares, circles and connecting lines in flat white-background light.

The bead is a classic barrel, drilled through the centre, with the motif repeating in banded sections along its length. Each eye, a small cream circle centred inside a dark brown square, sits framed by the stepped connecting lines. The high gloss and the cream-white tone at the drilled ends show the natural agate.

No cracks are visible anywhere along this bead. Some very light surface wear consistent with its age is present, but nothing that affects its structure or clarity. There are no bloodspots on this piece.
