🏛️ Ancient Dzi Shop specialises in authentic ancient and antique Tibetan dzi beads. Every piece is sold with unretouched photographs and honest condition disclosure.
The two faces of this bead tell different stories — and both of them are old.
Turn the bead to Face A and the motif resolves into a layered composition: an outer stepped square frames an inner stepped cross, which in turn frames a smaller ground cross at its centre. The structure is precise and architectural even in its current eroded state, with centuries of surface wear that has softened the cream lines into a warm silver-grey without collapsing the geometry beneath. Turn to Face B and the register changes entirely: the cross forms give way to a partial stepped motif in the upper field, and below it, a row of four to five etched dots — the stars — run along the lower register of the carnelian ground.
The motif lines across both faces are granular and eroded, consistent with the 500–1,000 year age estimate. This is not damage — it is the expected surface character of ancient etched carnelian that has been handled, worn, and slowly mineralising for centuries. The cream-to-silver tone of the etching has mellowed from whatever original white it carried into something more integrated with the carnelian itself.
The bead is beveled — the barrel tapers more sharply at the shoulders than a standard fusiform, with a slightly faceted profile visible at the transitions. The carnelian ground is a warm terracotta-orange with natural mineral striations running through the body. These striations are internal banding inherent to the stone — they are not cracks, and I confirm this independently from the photos. The drill ends show the warm translucent orange characteristic of genuine carnelian, with good gloss preserved at the ends despite the surface age on the body.
No chips or cracks are observed. This bead presents cleanly for its age.
The Double Cross-in-Cross & Stars Motif
The cross-in-cross family of motifs on ancient etched carnelian spans a wide geographic range — from the Indus Valley to Tibet and across the Central Asian trade routes. The nested cross composition, in which a framing square contains a cross which itself contains a further cross or ground field, is one of the more architecturally complex patterns found on ancient carnelian dzi. It is sometimes interpreted as a symbol of the four cardinal directions and their centre — a cosmological map rendered in miniature on stone. The stars, rendered as simple etched dots, appear frequently as secondary elements on ancient carnelian dzi, often interpreted as celestial markers or as amplifying symbols accompanying the primary motif. This piece carries both in combination — the cross structure on one face, the stars running beneath a partial cross on the other — making it a two-face composition that rewards close examination from multiple angles. This motif is also known as the Cross-in-Cross with Stars.
