Eight is the number of all directions — north, south, east, west, and the four diagonal points between them. An Eight Eye Dzi is, in this sense, a bead without a blind spot: it is believed to help its wearer do well in all endeavors, across every domain of life simultaneously. Not one field, not one relationship, not one pursuit — all of them. That scope is why the Eight Eye is among the most widely sought motifs in the Dzi tradition, and why a genuine ancient example in this condition commands serious attention.
The Condition
This bead is in exquisite condition. That word is used deliberately and precisely.
Ancient Dzi beads that have survived 500 to 800 years as worn amulets typically show their age — calcification, surface roughness, worn areas, the accumulated texture of centuries. This bead is different. Its surface is smooth and clean. The eight eye circles are sharp and well-defined, their cream-white rings clear against the warm grey-brown agate on every face. The natural agate banding runs consistently throughout as fine parallel lines, undisturbed. There are no cracks. Minor weathering marks are present and are consistent with genuine age — but they sit on a surface that remains, after five to eight centuries, in a state that most collectors would not expect to find.
This is not a recently made reproduction. It is a genuine ancient bead that has been exceptionally well preserved.
The Eye Pattern — Eight Eyes, Two Rows
The gallery photographs show all four faces of this bead. On the broader faces, five eye circles are visible simultaneously — a central eye flanked by two pairs. On the narrower faces, three eyes run the length. Across the full bead, eight eye circles are distributed in two rows of four — the classic Eight Eye configuration, all present and clearly etched.
What is notable in the photographs is the variation between eyes: some have a deep brown centre, one shows a darker near-black inclusion at its core. This is the natural character of the agate, not inconsistency in the etching. Each eye is unique because the stone beneath each one is unique. That is what genuine ancient agate looks like under honest photography.
The Agate
The agate on this bead is warm grey-brown — the same tonal family as the Two Eye bead (Anc-0426-TwE2) in our store, but at a much larger scale and with eight eyes distributed across the surface. The fine natural banding lines visible throughout the stone are characteristic of high-quality natural agate worked in the Tibetan tradition. The cream and ivory etching sits cleanly against the warm ground. At 51.3 mm, this is a substantial, visually commanding piece.
