The first thing you notice about this bead is the calcification. It does not sit on the surface — it has grown into it. The cream and grey-white mineral deposits are thick, raised, and distributed across the bead in heavy encrustations that have partially merged with the agate beneath. Under the macro lens, the calcified surface reveals a landscape of its own: cracked mineral layers, raised ridges, patches where the underlying black agate shows through in sharp contrast to the pale deposits above it. This is not a lightly calcified bead. This is a bead that has been in the ground, or in close contact with soil and organic material, for a very long time.
Underneath and within that calcification, the four rows of Tiger Tooth etching are still readable. The bold chevron pattern — four full rows of sweeping pointed forms running the entire length of the bead — emerges from beneath the mineral cover on every face. In some areas the calcification fills the etched grooves and builds above them; in others the black agate and cream etching show through with the clarity of the original pattern. The interplay between the etched design and the centuries of calcification that have grown over it gives this bead a visual complexity that no newly made piece can replicate.
Four Rows — An Unusual Configuration
Most Tiger Tooth Dzi beads carry one or two rows of the characteristic pattern. This bead carries four — a denser, more complex configuration that covers every face of the bead from end to end. The Tiger Tooth motif, also known as Tasso, Horse Teeth, or the Wave Motif depending on collector tradition, is believed to bring focused strength and courage to its wearer. Four rows do not simply repeat the same intention — they concentrate it. The entire surface of this bead is devoted to a single purpose, rendered in a pattern so dense it reads almost as texture rather than design.
What the Calcification Tells You
Calcification of this depth and character is geological evidence of age, not a surface feature. It forms when minerals from the surrounding environment migrate slowly into and onto the agate across centuries of contact — with soil, with organic material, with the body itself. It cannot be reproduced artificially. It cannot be accelerated. On a bead estimated at 800 to 1,000 years old, calcification of this heaviness is one of the most reliable physical markers of genuine extreme age available without laboratory testing.
The close-up photographs show this clearly: the calcification is thick, cracked, and raised — not a thin film but a genuine mineral accretion built up across what our estimation places at eight to ten centuries. A small orange-red bloodspot inclusion is also visible near one drill hole end, an additional natural characteristic of this specific piece.
