We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The links on this bead are not drawn on the surface — each one passes through the next, and the carnelian ground visible inside each void is part of the composition.

That structural quality — the sense that the motif has genuine depth, that each link is a three-dimensional form with an interior — is what separates the links motif from simpler linear designs. On the primary face (Image 2), four to five interlocking ovoid links run in a continuous horizontal chain across the bead's central band. Each link is rendered in cream-white to warm off-white etching; each has a clearly visible open centre where the warm orange-brown carnelian ground shows through. The links pass through one another as a true chain would — the overlapping points are rendered with enough clarity that the interlocking logic of the motif reads immediately, even across five centuries of surface change.

The ground colour of this bead is one of its most visually complex features. The treated etching zones are deep dark chocolate-brown, approaching charcoal in the deepest areas. But the bead's material is natural carnelian with visible banding, and at the end caps and on parts of each face, warm orange-brown to reddish-brown carnelian colour re-emerges — the original stone showing through where the alkaline treatment either faded or the natural banding intersected the surface. This colour dialogue between the dark treated ground and the warm carnelian base is most clearly readable in Images 5–7, where the bead's tapered ends display the warmest orange-brown tones against the darker central body. At 24.7mm × 11.8mm, this bead is more compact than the Ac-010825-4RT rail track bead (28.9mm), and the proportions feel denser — wider relative to length, with a more pronounced waist flare.

Multiple faces (Images 3–6) carry significant cream-white surface mineral deposits — irregular masses of pale material that have accumulated across the dark ground over centuries. These deposits are not damage; they are authentication. The chemistry of mineral migration through aged carnelian over 500–1,000 years produces exactly this kind of secondary surface accumulation, and the irregular, patchy distribution visible in the photographs — heavier on some faces, lighter on others — is characteristic of genuine long-term burial or storage in mineral-rich conditions. The Ac-030823-5TS2 tiger stripe bead with calcification shows a similar phenomenon; here the deposits are less structured but equally pervasive.

The octagonal body form is confirmed across multiple angles. From Images 3 and 5 especially, the flat facets and angular edge transitions of the octagonal cross-section are clearly visible — the same rare body geometry found in Ac-010825-4RT and Ac-030525-5TS. The drill holes (Images 7–8) are small and circular; the openings are significantly roughened and chipped at both ends — more pronounced surface weathering at the bore than on any other carnelian bead in this collection, consistent with the upper end of the 500–1,000 year age range.

The Links Motif

The links motif (鏈環紋 / liàn huán wén), sometimes described as the coins or chain motif, is among the most explicitly prosperity-oriented symbols in the carnelian dzi tradition. Interlocking links represent connections that cannot be broken: between the wearer and sources of wealth, between effort and reward, between one generation and the next. Each link passing through the next is understood as an unbroken chain of good fortune — a sequence of successes in which each achievement enables the one that follows. In Tibetan and Chinese folk tradition, the chain motif is strongly associated with merchants, traders, and those whose livelihood depends on sustained relationships and continuous flow of resources.
