Most Dzi beads are cylindrical. They have been cylindrical for as long as the tradition has existed. That is not an accident — the cylinder is the standard form, the shape that threads most easily onto a cord, the shape most conducive to the etching process. It is the default.
This bead is not cylindrical. It is octagonal — eight flattened faces running the full length of the bead, meeting at eight distinct ridges, each one carrying the Tiger Tooth and Wave pattern across a different plane. This shape is exceptionally rare in genuine ancient Dzi. It did not happen by accident, and it was not easy to produce. Someone chose to make this bead this way, at a time when doing so required considerably more skill and intention than cutting a cylinder.
That alone sets it apart from nearly everything else in the Dzi market.
The Dual Motif — Tiger Tooth & Wave
This bead carries two of the most closely related motifs in the Dzi tradition: the Tiger Tooth and the Wave. On many beads, these two patterns are nearly indistinguishable — the sweeping, pointed forms that run along the bead's body can read as teeth or as crests of water depending on how you look at them, and scholars and collectors have long debated the distinction.
On this bead, both interpretations are present simultaneously. The Tiger Tooth carries the energy of focused strength and courage — the precision of a predator, the confidence to act. The Wave carries continuity and flow — the unbroken movement of fortune, success that does not peak and crash but runs without interruption. Together on a single bead, they represent two qualities that rarely coexist in life but that every serious collector understands as complementary: power and persistence.
Age & Physical Character
This is a genuine ancient Tibetan Dzi bead, estimated to be between 500 and 800 years old. It was formed from high-quality natural agate and crafted by hand during a period that predates sustained European contact with Tibet. The bead has been worn as a body amulet across centuries — contact with skin, cloth, and the environment has softened its surface in the way that only time produces. No artificial aging, no surface treatment, no retouching.
