This bead is almost entirely white. Not because it was made that way — the agate beneath is deep black — but because fifteen to twenty centuries of calcification have built up across its surface until the mineral deposits approach full coverage. In some photographs, you can still read the Twelve Eye Lotus pattern beneath and within the calcification: the interlocking rounded forms, the eye circles arranged in their grid, the lotus geometry that gives this motif its name. In others, the calcification has consumed the pattern almost entirely, leaving only a landscape of raised cream-white mineral over dark agate.

This is not a flaw. This is a bead that has been in the world for two thousand years.

The Twelve Eye Lotus — Authority, Power, and Critical Insight
