Twelve eyes is the full count — and on this bead, all twelve are present, cleanly formed, and reading at the same depth across a chocolate-brown ground that hasn't faded in five centuries.

This ancient Tibetan twelve eye dzi bead measures 60.3×15.1mm and is estimated at 500–600 years of age. The ground is a warm, deep chocolate-brown — confirmed across all flat-lit white-background photographs — with cream-white motif lines that remain crisp and well-defined throughout. The twelve eye motif is distributed in three rows of four around the full circumference of the bead, each eye formed by a cream ring enclosing a dark brown centre, framed by L-bracket connector lines that link the eyes across the surface and give the composition its characteristic architectural structure. The motif is consistent and complete on every face — no interrupted lines, no faded sections.

The surface of the dark brown ground carries the fine-textured, slightly granular character of age-consistent surface crystallisation — a mineral process that takes place within the stone itself over centuries, and one of the clearest physical markers of genuine age in agate dzi beads. The cream motif lines show no equivalent crystallisation, which is also consistent with their different surface treatment. The drill end caps (visible in images 4 and 5) are a distinctly warmer reddish-brown — a natural colour zone within the agate — transitioning smoothly into the deeper chocolate-brown of the body. A very minor surface mark is visible on the body in image 3, consistent with centuries of handling; it is superficial and does not affect the structural integrity of the bead. No cracks or chips are present — I confirm this independently from all five photographs.

At 60.3×15.1mm, this is the longest and widest twelve eye dzi bead in the Ancient Dzi Shop collection. Its proportions give the full twelve-eye layout enough space to develop without crowding — each eye zone is distinct, each bracket line is legible, and the rows maintain their spacing around the full turn of the bead.

This piece is offered directly in the condition shown. No restoration, no cleaning beyond what centuries of Tibetan use have already done.

The Twelve Eye Motif

The twelve eye dzi is among the most significant configurations in Tibetan dzi bead tradition. In Tibetan Buddhist belief, each eye carries protective and auspicious power — the twelve-eye count is associated with the twelve nidānas (the twelve links of dependent origination), the twelve months of the Tibetan calendar, and the aspiration toward complete and unobstructed fortune in all directions and all times. Twelve eye dzi beads have been documented in the possession of Tibetan nobility, religious communities, and merchant families across the Himalayan trade routes. They are sought both as objects of spiritual significance and as centrepieces in necklace and bracelet compositions, where the full count of eyes is considered to extend the bead's protective radius.
