On this bead the scroll and the bloodspots are inseparable — one lives where the other concentrates.

The Green Tara motif on Face A is a continuous cursive line: it hooks, loops, and curves across a very dark brown ground in a composition that does not resolve into geometry. It is a figure drawn in a single movement, flanked by vertical stripe borders at each end, and the cream lines that form it carry a warm reddish tinge that deepens toward the boundaries of each stroke. Turn to Face B and the register shifts to a quieter double-wave composition — two parallel cream lines running the length of the face with a dark brown band between them. The two faces work together in the way they always do on Green Tara dzi: one active, one restful, both necessary.

The ground is very dark brown — deep and consistent from shoulder to shoulder, warming perceptibly at the transitions where the natural agate colour surfaces. It is not pitch-black; in the right light the warmth of the stone is present throughout, and the cream motif lines read against it with strong contrast.

Under macro photography, the cinnabar inclusions — 硃砂 (zhūshā), mercuric sulfide — appear as a warm reddish-brown dot scatter across the cream zones of the bead, with the concentration rising noticeably at the boundaries between the cream lines and the dark ground. This boundary-concentrated distribution pattern, where the bloodspots cluster most densely at the edge between light and dark, gives the motif lines a warm penumbra effect that is visible in the standard photographs as a peach-to-orange tinge along the cream zones. Macro photography also reveals fine age-consistent surface crystallisation across both the dark ground and cream areas — a positive mineralogical age marker, not damage.

No chips or cracks are observed independently. The bead presents very well for its age.

The Green Tara Motif

Green Tara (སྒྲོལ་མ་ལྗང་ཁུ, Drolma Jangkhu) is the swift-acting bodhisattva of compassion in Tibetan Buddhist tradition — a female deity understood to respond immediately to those who call upon her in moments of fear, difficulty, or obstruction. She is associated with the vitality of living nature, the clearing of obstacles, and active protective energy. Dzi beads carrying her motif are among the more sought-after pieces in the tradition, valued both for their spiritual resonance and for the relative rarity of this composition among surviving antique pieces. This bead joins two other Green Tara dzi in this collection — each on a distinct ground colour, inviting direct comparison.
