Turn this bead 90° and you are looking at a completely different idea.

Face A carries an open oval — a large warm cream ring without a pupil, without concentric inner rings, without any enclosed centre. It is a gate form: a portal, an arch, an opening. Face C, on the opposite side, carries a rectangular cream frame enclosing a fully closed concentric eye — outer ring, inner ring, dark pupil — the complete enclosed composition. One face is open. The other is closed. One offers passage. The other offers presence. This is the Heaven & Earth Gate dzi, and the two faces are not variations of the same thing but expressions of two distinct ideas held in a single object.

The bead measures 32.6mm × 13.8mm in a full, generously rounded ovoid barrel — wider at the mid-section and tapering symmetrically to smooth domed end caps. Among the Heaven & Earth family in this collection, it sits between the elongated profiles of At-121824-HE2 (48.3mm × 11.7mm) and At-082324-HE3 (48.2mm × 11.6mm) in proportional character, but at 13.8mm diameter and in its rounded form it has a distinctly more compact and dense presence than either. The ground is a deep charcoal-grey — cool, neutral, the only genuinely grey-ground bead in the entire collection. Not warm dark-brown, not pitch-black, but a cool dark slate-grey that gives the warm sandy-cream etching a low-temperature contrast, understated and precise.

The cream etching throughout has the rough, raised, mineralised texture that accumulates in genuinely old alkaline-etched agate over centuries — the bleached silica deposits sit proud of the surrounding stone surface with a granular quality that no recent etching replicates. This texture is most visible in Image 3 on the rectangular frame and concentric eye of the Earth Gate face, and in Image 4 where the bold cream T-bar / bracket gate element is most clearly defined. The two connector faces — Faces B and D — complete the motif system: Face B carries two curved wave-arc forms (upper and lower) with a dark gap between, a paired crescent composition; Face D carries the bracket/T-bar gate form that structurally links the oval and rectangular compositions around the bead's circumference.

The end caps are the same deep charcoal-grey as the body — no colour contrast at the tips — with glassy-smooth polished surfaces and small, precisely bored drilled holes. This glassy polish on the end caps, visible in Images 5 and 6, represents the best-preserved surface zone of the bead: where the dark agate ground has been protected from motif etching, the original polish of the stone remains intact across three to five centuries.

The listing's description of this bead as "extremely well preserved" is accurate and visible in the photographs. There are no cracks, the motif lines are fully intact across all four faces, and the raised cream etching retains its three-dimensional relief rather than having been worn flush with the surrounding ground.
