Look at the cream zones in these photographs. Not just the motif — the surface of the white areas themselves. What you are seeing is not a uniform flat white. Across every face of this bead, the cream-coloured zones between and around the eye rings carry a fine, dense scatter of brown micro-speckles — tiny mineral deposits distributed throughout the etched surface that give the entire bead a distinctly granular, almost sandy texture under close examination. This is one of the most legible and least faked surface features in the antique dzi world. It takes time to develop. Significant time.
This is a Qing Dynasty Chinese dzi, estimated at over 300 years old, measuring 59.1mm × 13.0mm. The three eye motif is expressed here in the open, generous style associated with Chinese dzi production of the period — each eye ring is broad, with a wide cream field between the outer and inner rings before reaching the small dark centre pupil. On Face A, a single eye sits alone at centre, commanding the full face. On Face B, two eyes appear side by side, their centre zone deepening to near-black between them where the brown ground has intensified with age. Both faces carry the same scattered speckle texture throughout every cream surface.
The speckle is not damage. It is not wear. It is the natural result of the agate's mineral composition interacting with centuries of environmental exposure — moisture, temperature change, light — working slowly into the etched zones over the course of three hundred years. It is a marker of authenticity that experienced collectors in Tibetan, Chinese, and Southeast Asian traditions look for specifically, because it cannot be replicated in newly made or recently faked beads.
Compared with the companion piece Antique Qing Dynasty Three Eye Dzi — At-0426-3EQ, this bead is slightly longer (59.1mm vs 57.5mm), carries a more pronounced surface speckle pattern throughout, and has a distinctly darker ground — the brown has shifted closer to dark chocolate in the field zones, while the cream areas retain their warmth through the speckle layer. The two beads are siblings in tradition but individual in character. Both are available in the antique dzi collection.
Both drill holes are intact. One tip shows the warm orange-red natural agate mineral formation at the hole entrance visible in Image 4 — the same feature that appears on the companion bead and confirms both came from stone with a similar natural mineral composition. The surface is smooth throughout despite the speckle texture. There are no cracks and no repairs.
