Antique Round Six Eye Lotus & Cross Motif Dzi Bead, 21.2×17.5mm, agate (At-121025-6ELC2)

On this bead, the cream is the field — and the dark elements are the markings within it.

Most Six Eye Lotus & Cross dzi work through a dark ground with cream motif elements reading on top of it. This bead reverses that relationship entirely. The ground is warm cream-beige — a sandy, slightly matte tone that covers the majority of each face — and the deep dark brown to near-black zones sit within it as bold, contained forms rather than as a background the cream lines are drawn across. The cross element at the centre of the primary face (Image 2) reads as a four-pointed cream-beige star form enclosed within a dark frame; the six eye positions around the circumference appear as cream-beige rounded forms with dark centres, the dark reading as the pupil and the cream as the surrounding field. Turn the bead 90 degrees (Image 3) and the composition shifts: the same elements now read as a different arrangement, the dark zones more visually dominant from this angle, the cross less immediately legible. Images 4 and 5 continue the rotation — each face presenting a fresh reading of the same motif, the composition never fully settling into a single resolved statement.

The cream-beige ground across this bead is consistent throughout all six photographs — a warm, sandy tone that sits closer to cream than to white, with a slightly granular, matte surface character that distinguishes it from the high-gloss ground of more recent pieces. The dark zones are deep dark brown approaching near-black, warm rather than cool in undertone, with softly diffused edges at the boundary between dark and cream — the signature of age-consistent etching in which the original sharp line has settled and spread very slightly into the surrounding ground over two to four centuries.

Images 6 and 7 show both drill ends. The end cap zones at both poles are surrounded by a deep warm dark brown zone — slightly warmer and more clearly brown than the near-black body dark zones, the natural agate colour at the poles distinct from the etched body. Both drill holes are small and well-centred. The motif elements continue to the edge of the end cap zones on both ends, visible in Images 6 and 7 as cream-beige star and connector forms running to the lip of the drill opening.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs, confirmed as my own independent finding.

The Six Eye Lotus & Cross Motif

The Six Eye Lotus dzi (六眼蓮花天珠) combines the eye — protective and clarity-bestowing — with the lotus, symbol of purity and wisdom. Six eyes distributed across the full circumference ensure the protective quality is present from every direction. The cross element — a four-pointed form at each face centre — adds a second layer of symbolic geometry, amplifying the composition's density and its association with the amplification of positive energy in all directions. In Tibetan belief, this motif is associated with wisdom, the prevention of misfortune through clear perception, and the capacity to navigate difficulty without being clouded by it. The cream-dominant ground on this bead is an unusual inversion of the standard colour relationship for this motif — making it visually distinctive within the dzi tradition and within this collection.

For the Ancient Six Eye Lotus & Cross pair in this collection — same motif, inverted colour relationship, dark ground with cream motif — see Ac-020124-6ELC. The colour distinction is significant: this bead has a cream-dominant ground; that pair has a dark ground. For antique Six Eye dzi in barrel form, see At-053026-6E and At-042925-6E2.

The cross reads differently on every face — and the ground it sits in is not the ground you'd expect.
