🏛️ Ancient Dzi Shop specialises in authentic ancient and antique Tibetan dzi beads. Every piece is sold with unretouched photographs and honest condition disclosure.
The cream on this bead does not form a line — it sweeps, hooks, and turns back on itself like a cloud in motion.
The Ruyi motif is one of the most distinctive compositions in the Tibetan and Sino-Tibetan dzi tradition — a flowing scroll or cloud-head form that curves back against the dark ground rather than running parallel to the bead's axis. On this piece, a large cream zone arcs across Face A in a broad upward sweep, hooking at the peak and returning — a form that reads simultaneously as an auspicious cloud, a sceptre head, and the character 如 rendered in stone. Turn the bead and the same cream lines shift register: from Face B the form reads as a bold horizontal band with bracket-like cream extensions at the edges; from the turn it becomes a sweeping arc that crosses the dark field diagonally. Each rotation is a different aspect of the same composition.
The ground is very dark brown — deep and consistent throughout the body, with the cream zones reading in strong contrast against it. The Ruyi scroll is boldly rendered for a bead of this age, with crisp boundaries between the cream and dark zones that have not significantly softened over the bead's two to three centuries of existence.
Under macro photography, the cinnabar bloodspots — 硃砂 (zhūshā), mercuric sulfide — appear as an exceptionally fine scatter of dark micro-dots distributed throughout the cream zones. These are among the finest individual inclusions documented in this collection: each dot is discrete and very small, creating a dense, even field of micro-pinpoints across the white agate ground rather than the larger spots seen on other bloodspot pieces. Two macro photographs document this distribution across separate cream areas of the bead. The overall effect in standard photography is subtle — the cream reads as clean at normal viewing distance — but the macro reveals the full density of the inclusion field.
The bead is compact in its proportions — broader relative to its length than a standard fusiform, with well-rounded shoulders at both ends. Both drill ends are clean. Minor age-consistent surface texture is noted on the dark ground zones. No chips or cracks are observed independently.
The Ruyi Motif
The Ruyi (如意, "as you wish") is one of China's most enduring auspicious symbols — a sceptre with a cloud-shaped or scroll head, traditionally held by emperors, deities, and bodhisattvas as a symbol of authority, good fortune, and the fulfilment of wishes. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Ruyi motif on dzi beads carries these same associations: the power to fulfil wishes, the removal of obstacles, and the attraction of good fortune. Ruyi dzi are relatively uncommon in antique collections — the motif's flowing, asymmetric character makes it one of the more demanding compositions in the dzi-making tradition — and pieces of this age and condition with documented bloodspots are particularly seldom encountered.
