The three eyes on this bead do not present themselves cleanly. They emerge from a ground that is already warm and complex — a mottled field of taupe, brown, and cream where the motif lines and the natural banding of the stone work together rather than in sharp contrast. Turn the bead slowly and the eyes resolve one or two at a time, each appearing as a soft cream oval ring with a warm brown interior, before the composition shifts back into the flowing wavy lines of the connector faces.

This is a three-eye dzi in the variant tradition — the eye forms are softer and more irregular than the crisp concentric circles of the standard three-eye, the separating elements replaced by broad wavy cream lines that move across the dark ground in an organic rather than geometric pattern. Two eyes appear together on the primary face, their oval rings clear against the warm brown ground. The third eye sits on the adjacent face, partially visible from the two-eye angle as an arc at the edge, completing its full form only when the bead is rotated to bring it into direct view. The connector faces between the eye positions carry broad flowing cream wave elements — the same wavy line vocabulary seen on the eye-zone fills — so that the whole circumference reads as a continuous flowing composition rather than a series of distinct panels.

The ground colour confirmed from the white-background shots is a warm taupe-brown to grey-beige — a complex, mottled tone with natural variation across the body. The cream motif lines carry warmth rather than stark whiteness. One drill end presents as cream-white; the opposite end shows a warm orange-toned agate-internal colour — confirmed as agate, not a separate material.

The macro photograph documents cinnabar bloodspots (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) as dense, scattered dark pinpoints distributed across the cream and white zones of the bead. The inclusions are clearly individual — a macro-constellation dot pattern spread broadly across the cream ground, with consistent density across the visible field.

Condition is good for a piece of this age. No cracks or chips observed. The surface carries age-consistent micro-texture visible under macro.

The three-eye dzi is one of the foundational forms of the Tibetan dzi tradition, associated in Buddhist and Bön cosmology with the Three Jewels — the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha — and with the three spheres of existence: the realms of desire, form, and formlessness. Three eyes are also understood as the three aspects of time: past, present, and future held simultaneously in a single field of awareness. Worn on the body, the three-eye dzi is said to bring wealth, longevity, and the continuous merit that arises from refuge in the Three Jewels. The variant form of this bead — with its softer eye rings and flowing wavy line composition — carries the same symbolic weight within a visual vocabulary that feels closer to the natural banding of the stone itself.
