Antique Tibetan Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 48.7mm × 11.6mm, Honey-Brown Agate (At-052526-DW3)

The wave motif on most dzi beads travels in one direction. On this bead, it meets itself. The Double Wave Motif places two wave forms facing each other across a shared axis — and where they meet, they create a second shape entirely: a diamond lozenge, a bow-tie, a compressed eye. You can see it clearly in the hero photograph. On one face of the bead, the two waves converge to form that central diamond. Rotate the bead, and the same motif reads differently — now you see two cupped arches, opening away from each other, framing the space between them. Same motif, two readings. This is what makes the Double Wave Motif compositionally unusual among dzi designs: it is self-referential, each wave defining the other.

The palette on this bead is what collectors notice first. This is not the high-contrast black-and-white of many treated dzi. The ground agate here is a warm, deep chocolate-brown, and the wave forms are rendered in a soft cream-to-honey tone. The result is organic and rich, closer in feeling to aged wood or tortoiseshell than to graphic print. The deep warm-brown end caps — visible in the end-view photographs — are characteristic of quality natural agate and add to the overall visual warmth of the piece.

This bead should not be confused with the smaller Double Wave bead (At-0426-DW2) also in the shop. That piece is 20mm, near-spherical, and carries cinnabar inclusions. This one is 48.7mm × 11.6mm — a full elongated torpedo form that wears as a statement pendant or a dominant bead in a necklace. The motif has the length to fully express itself: three clear vertical stripes divide the body into two main panels, and in each panel the two waves perform their facing geometry without any compression.

In Tibetan tradition, the Wave Motif is associated with perpetual, unbroken success — a tide that does not recede. The Double Wave doubles that association, with some traditions reading the facing waves as a symbol of balance: two forces moving in harmony, sustaining each other. The motif may also be interpreted as the Tiger Teeth Motif; the two are closely related and at this scale the boundary between them is deliberately fluid in Tibetan visual tradition.

The bead is estimated to be 200 to 400 years old. Material is high-quality natural agate. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Fine weathering marks and minor surface digs are present and are, as always with pieces of this age, authentic marks of the bead's history rather than flaws.
