Antique Tibetan Heaven & Earth Motif Dzi Bead, 48.2mm × 11.6mm, Near-Black Agate (At-082324-HE3)
Antique Tibetan Heaven & Earth Motif Dzi Bead, 48.2mm × 11.6mm, Near-Black Agate (At-082324-HE3)
The Heaven & Earth gate on this bead does not close. Look carefully at the hero photograph: the oval ring that defines this motif is open at the top. The cream line begins at the lower left, arcs upward and around, and stops — leaving the gate without a ceiling. This is not wear or damage. It is how the motif sits on this bead, and it is what makes this piece categorically different from every other Heaven & Earth dzi in this collection.
In the two other H&E beads here — At-121824-HE2 and At-0426-HE — the oval gate is closed: a complete ring, heaven and earth joined by an unbroken line. Here, the ring is open. Some scholars and collectors interpret the open-top Heaven & Earth gate as a gate actively in use — the threshold between realms held open, not sealed. Whether you hold that reading or not, the visual effect is immediately distinct: this oval breathes. It does not enclose. It opens upward.
The four faces of this bead each resolve the motif differently as the curved agate surface refracts the same cream lines into different geometries. Face B splits the motif into two independent forms: an upper open arch and a lower U-bracket, the dark agate holding them apart. Face C abandons curves entirely — the motif reads as a rectangular window frame, four vertical stripes connected by a horizontal band, pure architecture with no roundness remaining. Face D takes the lines into an angular stepped bracket, a T-form or staircase shape that carries no trace of the oval you saw on face A. The same motif in four different states, none of them repeating.
The ground of this bead is among the darkest in the collection — a near-black that is deeper than the deep dark brown of At-121824-HE2, with warm brown undertones only becoming visible at the end caps and under raking light. The cream motif lines are relatively narrow on this ground, which gives the design a different visual weight from the bolder HE2: finer, more architectural, the dark ground dominant. In the angled end photographs, the open oval reads clearly as a U-shape from the end — the arc of the gate visible even from the drill-hole end.
The bead measures 48.2mm × 11.6mm — a long slender form with a slightly more pronounced taper than HE2. Material is high-quality natural agate. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Natural weathering marks and fine surface scoring consistent with a piece estimated to be 200 to 400 years old are present and authentic.
