Antique Tibetan Six Eye Naga Dragon Eye Dzi Bead, 49.0mm × 11.6mm (At-092524-6EN)

📷 We never retouch our photos. Every bead is photographed exactly as it is. What you see is what you receive.

Rotate this bead and you see two different parts of the same creature. On the face-eye faces, two large concentric-ring eyes sit side by side, their inner rings nearly touching at the centre, forming a figure-8 — a paired gaze looking outward in both directions simultaneously. These are the Dragon's eyes. Rotate ninety degrees and the eyes disappear. In their place: a large hexagonal or diamond-shaped form with a single eye at its centre, flanked by deep dark panels on either side. These are the Dragon's scales — the body of the Naga rendered as geometry. The same bead, the same motif, two completely different visual readings depending on which face you are holding.

This is what makes the Six Eye Naga / Dragon Eye dzi exceptional among eye-motif beads. A four-eye or nine-eye bead is defined by the count and arrangement of its eyes. The Naga dzi is defined by something more complex: it is understood to embody the Dragon itself, not merely to reference it. The paired eyes on the face-sides are the creature looking. The scale pattern on the alternating sides is the creature's body. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Naga (dragon-serpent) is a powerful elemental being associated with water, the earth's deep resources, protective power, and the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum. A Naga dzi is understood to carry the Dragon's full power — benevolent, magnificent, and protective — condensed into a portable agate object.

The cream lines on this bead are among the boldest in this collection. The contrast between the deep warm dark-brown agate ground and the cream motif rings is very high, and the lines themselves are wide and confident — no fading at the edges, no compression. The paired eyes on the face sides have clear, well-centred dark pupils within their cream rings, and the hexagonal scale forms on the body sides read with sharp geometric clarity. The surface is smooth and clean throughout. The rounded end caps — visible in the angled end photographs — are warm dark brown, slightly prominent, with small centred drill holes.

The six "eyes" of the Six Eye Naga are counted as follows: two paired eyes on each of the two face sides equals four, plus the single eye in the centre of each body-scale face equals two more — six in total, distributed across four faces. The count is embedded in the structure of the motif rather than visible from any single angle. This is another way this bead differs from a standard multi-eye piece: you have to hold it and turn it to encounter all six.

The bead measures 49.0mm × 11.6mm. Material is high-quality natural agate. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Estimated age is 200 to 400 years. Natural weathering marks consistent with age are present.
