The cream lines on this bead don't follow a repeating pattern — they branch, reconnect, and enclose black islands of different sizes on every face, so no two rotations read the same way.
This antique Tibetan Tree of Life dzi bead is set on a pitch-black ground, confirmed from the white-background photographs. The cream-white motif lines form a dense, branching network that covers the full surface of the bead — interconnecting at irregular intervals, enclosing black zones of varying shapes, and resolving into different compositions depending on angle. Image 1 reads as an open lattice of branching lines and rectangular black voids; image 2 shows the bead rotated to reveal more organic, looping forms with dark circular centres; image 3 presents a third configuration of scattered cream curves; image 4 shows the back face, where the branching returns in a different register. No two faces of this bead are the same.
The end caps are warm reddish-brown — a natural colour zone within the agate, distinct from both the pitch-black body and the cream motif lines. This three-tone character (pitch-black ground, cream-white motif, warm brown ends) is visible across all rotations and gives the bead an unusual depth compared with the two-tone standard. The drill end in image 6 shows this end cap clearly: the warm brownish-red zone transitions seamlessly into the pitch-black body.
Under macro examination, the black ground surface shows fine linear micro-abrasion consistent with long use and age — this is surface wear, not structural damage, and is typical of a bead that has circulated through Tibetan communities over centuries. No chips or cracks are present anywhere on the piece.
The cinnabar inclusions (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) are clearly documented in the macro photographs. Images 7 and 8 show discrete dark brown to reddish-brown spots distributed throughout the cream motif zones — multiple individual pinpoints of varying sizes, with a notable concentration in the end-zone cream areas (image 7) and within the looping cream elements on the body (image 8, where one inclusion appears as a dark circular spot contained within a cream loop). Distribution is cream-zone focused scattered with denser concentration at the end zone and inner motif curves.
At 52.0×14.2mm this is a substantial bead — long enough to anchor a necklace, with a diameter that gives the motif full room to develop across the surface.
The Tree of Life Motif
The Tree of Life — known in Tibetan Buddhist contexts as the world tree or cosmic axis — appears in dzi iconography as a dense, branching network of lines that covers the bead's surface without resolving into a fixed, bounded symbol. Unlike eye motifs or wave motifs with defined units, the Tree of Life is understood as a whole-surface composition: the cream lines are the branches, the black zones are the spaces between them, and the bead as an object represents the trunk. This motif is associated with vitality, interconnection, growth, and the sustaining energy that links the earthly and the celestial. It is among the less common motifs in the antique Tibetan dzi canon, and pieces featuring it are sought for both their visual complexity and their symbolic weight.
