Antique Tibetan Two Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 47.9mm × 11.7mm, Asymmetric Eyes (At-082624-2E)
📷 We never retouch our photos. Every bead is photographed exactly as it is. What you see is what you receive.
The two eyes on this bead are not the same as each other. The first — visible on face A, the hero photograph — is a fully closed concentric ring: a dark brown pupil centred within a clear cream circle, complete and resolved. The second — visible on face C — is open. The cream ring does not complete its circuit. It curls into a C-shape or an open spiral, the line stopping before it returns to its own beginning. Same motif, same bead, two different states of completion. One eye closed. One eye still opening.
This asymmetry is not a flaw. On hand-made dzi beads produced two to four centuries ago, perfect bilateral symmetry is the exception rather than the rule. The craftsperson applied the treatment that created the cream pattern on a natural agate surface — a surface with its own curvature, its own mineral variation, its own resistance. The two eyes resolved differently because the stone responded differently. That differential response is what you read as the open eye and the closed eye, and it is one of the markers that distinguishes genuine aged dzi from modern reproductions where the symmetry is machine-perfect.
The between-eye faces are equally worth studying. On faces B and D — the two rotations where neither eye is facing the viewer — the cream lines that form the eyes and their surrounding structure read as an entirely different pattern: an inverted T-shape with a sinuous wave line beneath it, the geometry of the two-eye framework visible from the side as an architectural bracket. This is not a separate motif. It is the same two-eye structure seen from ninety degrees, refracted by the bead's curvature into an unrecognisable form. Every dzi bead does this — the between-eye faces always read differently from the eye faces — but on this bead, where the two eyes themselves already differ, the between-eye reading adds another layer of visual variation.
The Two Eye Motif in Tibetan tradition is associated with harmony — between partners, between colleagues, between any two forces that must find balance. It is described as bringing good relations at home and at work simultaneously. The two eyes represent two presences in alignment: husband and wife, manager and team, self and world. A bead that holds harmony as its purpose, for two to four hundred years, has been doing that work for a long time before it arrived here.
The bead measures 47.9mm × 11.7mm on a near-black dominant ground with warm cream motif lines. The end caps — visible in the angled end photographs — are warm amber-brown rounded domes with small centred drill holes. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Natural weathering marks consistent with age are present throughout.
