Antique Tibetan Wave & Stripe Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspot Inclusions, 40.3mm × 11.3mm (At-052526-WS)
Antique Tibetan Wave & Stripe Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspot Inclusions, 40.3mm × 11.3mm (At-052526-WS)
Count the stripes on this bead. There are four of them — four clean vertical columns of deep black agate, each one separated from the next by a crisp band of cream-white. Now look at what runs between them horizontally: three wave lines, white against black, each one curving in the same direction, repeating across the body of the bead like a written rhythm. This is the Wave and Stripe Motif — one of the most visually commanding combinations in the Tibetan dzi tradition — and on this particular bead, the execution is unusually precise. The boundaries between black and white are sharp. The wave curves are consistent. At 40.3mm long, the motif has room to fully develop across the bead's surface without compression.
In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Wave Motif is associated with never-ending success — the wave that does not break, that continues forward without stopping. The Stripe Motif is linked to prosperity and forward movement in business and trade. The two together were considered an especially auspicious pairing, which is why this motif combination has been particularly favoured by merchants and businesspeople across generations. A bead carrying both is understood to carry double momentum.
The bloodspot inclusions are what elevate this piece beyond a standard Wave & Stripe bead. Under standard photography they are not the dominant visual feature — the bold black-and-white graphic pattern draws the eye first. But in the macro photographs you can see what lies beneath: at the wave-to-stripe boundary, scattered iron-oxide micro-inclusions appear in warm orange-red, sitting within the white agate zone. These bright vermillion bloodspot formations are a natural geological occurrence in aged agate and are considered a mark of exceptional quality and authenticity among serious dzi collectors.
The bead measures 40.3mm × 11.3mm — a long, slender barrel form that wears elegantly on a necklace. The agate is high-quality natural stone with good translucency in the white zones. Condition is excellent with no cracks. The fine weathering marks present on the surface are consistent with a piece estimated to be 200 to 400 years old and are part of its authentic character. The drill hole ends, visible in the end-view photographs, show the warm brown agate end-caps typical of genuine aged Tibetan dzi.

The Wave & Stripe combination has carried meaning across Tibetan culture for centuries — painted on monastery walls, woven into textiles, and worn as portable talismans by traders crossing the plateau. This bead is a surviving, holdable piece of that tradition. The pattern is not decorative. It is intentional.
