This bead did not need a craftsman to make an eye. The stone made one itself. A pale blue-white oval band runs across one face, surrounding a warm tan ring that transitions into a very deep dark brown centre — concentric, centred, reading as a single eye with complete clarity. The outer ground of the bead is the same very deep dark brown that is almost black, so the white band reads against it with maximum contrast. Turn the bead to the opposite face and the white is almost entirely absent — the eye is a single-face composition, visible from the front and partially from the sides, complete on its own terms.

The form adds to the distinction. This is not a barrel bead but a compact olive shape — widest at the centre, tapering to two pointed tips where the drill holes sit. The equatorial edge running around the perimeter of the bead is left in a raw, faceted state — the natural outer surface of the agate stone, rougher and more textured than the smoother flat faces on either side. This contrast between the polished inner faces and the raw outer edge is a characteristic of naturally formed agate material where the stone's own exterior has been retained as part of the piece rather than ground away entirely.

The drill holes at both pointed ends are small, clean, and intact — visible in images 5 and 6, both showing the warm-toned agate interior at the channel opening. The bead sits stably on its wider equatorial zone. No cracks, no fresh damage. The rough edge texture is the natural character of the material and not a flaw.

The internal colour range across all four faces is wider than the dominant ground tone suggests: very deep dark brown to almost black in the body zones, transitioning to warm reddish-brown at the side transitions visible from certain angles, with the white to pale blue-white band providing a dramatic counterpoint on the primary eye face. The colour shift between faces is one of this piece's strongest visual qualities.

The Naturally-Formed One Eye Motif

When the natural banding of an agate stone produces a composition that reads as a single eye — a central zone framed by encircling bands, all formed without any human etching — the piece is recognised within the dzi tradition as a naturally-formed one eye dzi (天然一眼天珠). The single eye is associated with the energy of awakening, clarity, and unobstructed perception. Naturally-formed dzi are regarded in Tibetan tradition as gifts of the earth itself rather than the product of human craft — stones that arrived at their form through geological processes across vast spans of time. The single eye formation on a stone of this character, with its dramatic dark-and-white contrast, represents one of the most direct expressions of the motif the earth is capable of producing.
