The eye on this bead was not etched — it grew there. The natural banding of the agate has produced a formation across the body that the eye reads as intentional: a central zone framed by converging stripe bands, the surrounding layers stepping outward in sequence from white through grey-blue to the very dark brown ground. No tool shaped this. The stone did it across however many millions of years it took to lay down these bands in exactly this arrangement, at exactly this scale, in exactly this colour sequence.

The colour range on this bead is wide. The end caps and body ground are very dark brown to near-black — the end cap shots show both the warm and the cool end of that darkness, one slightly warmer in tone, the other closer to black. Moving inward from either end, the body transitions through a dark charcoal-brown with a distinct blue-grey quality — a steel-toned mid-ground that is neither pure grey nor pure brown but something between. The stripe bands themselves run from soft grey-blue at their edges to a sharp, bright white at the brightest line, then back out to grey-blue on the other side. The result across four faces is a bead that reads differently at every rotation — the bands catch light differently, the blue-grey quality intensifies or recedes, the white line narrows or broadens depending on the angle.

At 56.0×19.9mm this is a substantial piece. The diameter nearly reaches 20mm — wide enough to be immediately noticeable as a pendant or focal bead. The taper at both ends gives the bead its characteristic elongated oval form, and the drill holes at both ends are proportionally small, clean, and undamaged relative to the bead's mass.

The surface is smooth and uninterrupted across all faces. No chips, no cracks, no calcification. The banding lines visible throughout the stone are the natural internal structure of the agate — fine parallel lines running through the body that document the stone's own growth history and confirm the natural, unmodified character of the material.

The Naturally-Formed One Eye Motif

When the natural banding of an agate stone produces a formation that reads as a single eye — a central zone framed by encircling bands — the piece is recognised within the dzi tradition as a naturally-formed one eye dzi (天然一眼天珠). The single eye is understood to carry the energy of awakening, clarity, and perception: the eye that sees clearly, that cuts through confusion, that brings the wearer into alignment with fundamental awareness. Naturally-formed dzi — where the motif arises from the stone's own geology rather than from human etching — carry a particular status in Tibetan tradition, regarded as gifts of the earth itself rather than human craft.
