The benefactor form on this bead is upright on one face and inverted on the face directly opposite — so the same motif reads as reaching upward from one angle and descending from the other, as though two figures share the surface back to back.
This is a newly crafted Taiwan dzi bead with a benefactor motif — one of the most visually dynamic of all dzi forms, its central eye and sweeping hooked arms creating a composition that transforms at every quarter-turn. The bead has three distinct colour zones: a pitch-black ground in the etched body areas, cream-white motif lines that define the eye and arm elements, and broad warm peach-beige banding that wraps the middle register and gives this particular piece an unusually warm, organic character quite different from the stark black-and-white palette of many Taiwan dzi. The interplay of these three tones — black, cream, and peachy-tan — gives the motif a rounded, almost illustrated quality across the four faces.
At 37.0×12.0mm, this is a compact and well-proportioned barrel. The end caps are consistent with agate: one showing a glossy grey-green agate face, the other a warm peach-beige surface with a small centred drill hole. A fine surface scratch is present in the cream zone, visible in the macro photograph; it is shallow and does not affect the integrity of the bead.
The macro photograph documents cinnabar bloodspot inclusions clearly. Warm reddish-brown cinnabar (硃砂/zhusha, mercuric sulfide) coloration is distributed in a scattered pattern concentrated in the cream and peach-beige motif zones, where the lighter ground makes the reddish inclusions most visible.
The Benefactor Motif
The benefactor dzi — sometimes called the "Namthar" or Ruyi dzi — represents the presence of a protecting patron or spiritual guide: someone who opens paths that would otherwise remain closed and whose influence brings resources, opportunity, and support at critical junctures. The central eye of the motif represents clear seeing — the capacity to perceive what is truly needed — while the curving hooked arms below symbolise the hands of the benefactor reaching down to lift others. In Tibetan tradition, wearing a benefactor dzi is understood to attract the right people, sponsors, and circumstances at exactly the right moment, dissolving obstacles through connection rather than force.
