Double Heaven & Earth Motif, 40.9×11.2mm, very dark brown agate (N-062926-DHE)

Each face of this bead shows a different part of the same motif — and the composition only completes when the bead has been turned all the way around.

This is a new Taiwan-crafted dzi bead in natural agate, carrying the Double Heaven & Earth motif in bold cream-white lines against a very deep dark brown ground. The ground is a concentrated, dense brown — confirmed from the white-background photographs — that reads close to black in direct light but carries a faint warm undertone at the edges where it meets the cream motif lines, giving the piece a slightly richer character than a purely black-ground bead. The cream-white motif lines are clean and well-defined, with strong contrast against the dark field.

The Heaven & Earth motif appears twice around the full circumference of the bead, which means the complete double composition cannot be captured in a single photograph. Images 2 through 5 document four face rotations. Face A presents a clear circle and square in sequence — the defining elements of the HE motif. Rotate to Face B and the same elements shift: the curved arch form of the lower HE element becomes more prominent, the square receding. Face C brings the square and circle back into clear alignment from a different orientation. Face D is dominated by the arch curves. Held in the hand and turned slowly, the bead presents a continuous variation on its single theme.

The form is a standard barrel with gently tapered ends. The drill holes are visible in Images 6 and 7 — standard size, clean, with a warm honey-brown end cap surround. The surface is smooth and well-finished throughout. No cracks or chips are present — this is my own observation from all six photo angles.

The Heaven & Earth Motif

The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地珠) pairs the circle (heaven) with the square (earth) — two of the most ancient and fundamental symbols in Tibetan and East Asian cosmology. Together they represent the union of opposites: sky and ground, yang and yin, the boundless and the bounded. This pairing is believed to bring balance and harmony to the wearer, resolving obstacles between the spiritual and material realms and opening the way for fortune to flow. The double presentation of the motif — two HE compositions on one bead — amplifies this balancing quality across all directions.
