The Four Activities motif on this bead is built from overlapping wave and chevron elements that create a lattice-like composition as they wrap around the circumference. No two faces read the same pattern: image 1 shows the horizontal banding with chevron intersections; image 2 shows the X-pattern where two diagonal flows cross; image 3 reveals a row of oval light zones on both upper and lower registers; image 4 opens into a broader, more diffuse field. The motif is designed to be read in rotation rather than from a fixed position, which is consistent with how the Four Activities concept operates — as energies that work in all directions simultaneously.

The surface has been deliberately treated with a crackle finish — a fine network of crazing lines across the grey-brown zones, visible across all four face images and extending to the end cap areas in images 5 and 6. This treatment is applied to give the bead an aged appearance. It produces a surface quality that reads differently from an untreated new dzi: more matte in the lighter zones, more textured in the darker ones, with the crackle lines adding visual complexity that photographs as a settled, older-looking surface. This is not genuine age — it is a crafted effect, and it is disclosed here for what it is.

The colour palette is tonal rather than high-contrast. The two ground zones — a warm beige-grey in the lighter areas and a deeper cool brown-grey in the darker — are relatively close in value, which gives the bead a quiet, subdued character distinct from the sharper dark-on-cream contrast of many Taiwan dzi. In certain lighting, the lighter zones carry a faint translucency from the agate's natural quality.

At 27.8×11.4mm, this is an unusually compact piece — the proportions are almost as wide relative to length as any barrel dzi in the collection, giving it a different presence on a strand than a longer fusiform form would. Both drill holes are visible in images 5 and 6, each small and centred in the rounded end cap. The crackle treatment covers the end cap surfaces as well as the main body.

This is not a genuine antique or ancient bead. It was crafted in Taiwan and deliberately finished to carry an aged appearance.

The Four Activities Motif

The Four Activities (四業, sìyè) represent the four Buddhist ritual actions attributed to enlightened beings: pacifying, enriching, magnetising, and subjugating. Together they cover the full range of ways that spiritual power can be applied to benefit beings — calming harm, increasing good fortune, drawing in positive conditions, and overcoming obstacles. A dzi bearing the Four Activities motif is traditionally considered to be a comprehensive protective and auspicious piece, because it carries the energy of all four actions at once.
