The composition on this bead is organised into three distinct panels, each separated by vertical cream-white stripe dividers that run the full height of the bead's long face. The left and right panels carry Guru Rinpoche's ritual paraphernalia — complex curvilinear and angular cream-white forms reading as the implements of tantric practice: scroll brackets, hooked lines, and freely moving curves that fill each panel with controlled asymmetry. The centre panel on each long face carries a single eye: a cream-white ring framing a deep black center, well-defined and cleanly executed. Three eyes in total across the bead's two long faces. The paraphernalia elements are not mirrored — the left panel and right panel on any given face carry different arrangements, the craftsman's hand evident in the variation between them.

The ground is pitch-black throughout, running uniformly from face to face and all the way to both drill ends with no colour transition at the tips. The cream-white motif lines read in high contrast against this ground — sharp where the etching is deepest, softening slightly at the edges where the white integrates into the black agate. At several points across the patterning, a warm dark brown undertone surfaces through the cream, a natural quality of the agate's layering beneath the motif.

The form is a pronounced elongated torpedo — more sharply tapered toward both ends than a standard barrel, giving the bead a lean, assertive profile at 58.0 mm. Both drill holes are small and clean, set centrally in the black tips, with no rim damage. Surface condition is excellent throughout. No cracks or chips are present on any face.

Guru Rinpoche's Ritual Paraphernalia & the Three-Eye Motif

Padmasambhava — Guru Rinpoche — is revered across all schools of Tibetan Buddhism as the master who established the Vajrayana teachings in Tibet in the eighth century. His ritual implements — the vajra scepter, the khatvanga staff, the skull cup, the dharma wheel — are among the most potent symbols in the Tibetan tantric tradition, understood as physical embodiments of enlightened power and method. On dzi beads, these paraphernalia elements appear as abstract cream-line forms: the implements translated into the etched vocabulary of the dzi tradition, their identity carried in the gesture of the lines rather than in literal representation.

Three eyes on a dzi bead are associated with the three realms — heaven, earth, and the underworld — and with the capacity to perceive across all three. Combined with Guru Rinpoche's paraphernalia, the three-eye motif creates a bead understood to carry both the master's protection and a widened field of awareness, across realms and obstacles alike.
