The cream figure at the centre of this bead doesn't sit in a single fixed zone — it wraps the surface, and at each quarter-turn it reads as a completely different composition.
From the front face, the Benefactor motif is fully legible: a central eye-ring with a dark pupil, flanked by two looping arms that curl inward toward each other, the whole figure framed by double plain stripes at either end. Rotate the bead a quarter-turn and the same lines now read as an interlocking grid of cream-and-dark blocks, the looping arms no longer visible as a figure at all. Rotate again and a new arrangement appears — open arcs, a lower dot, a more open framing. The composition genuinely shifts at every face, not because the motif is ambiguous, but because the wraparound design was constructed to read differently from each angle.
The ground runs in two zones. Through the central body, confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photos, it is pitch-black — high-gloss, clean, without variation. At both drill ends it shifts to dark brown, visible clearly in the angled end shots where the drill channel meets the stone. The cream motif lines sit against both zones in turn as the eye travels from end to end.
No cracks are present. This is my own independent finding from the photos — not inherited from any prior description.
Bloodspot (Cinnabar / 硃砂 / Zhusha) Detail
Macro photography documents cinnabar inclusions throughout this bead. The mercuric sulfide (硃砂, zhusha) appears as dense reddish-orange to warm russet speckling, distributed pervasively across every cream zone — the eye-ring, both looping arms, and all plain stripes. Under magnification the coloration is clearly distinct from surface shadow or debris: the dots carry genuine reddish-brown warmth and appear within the cream body rather than on top of it. Concentration is highest at the boundaries between cream and dark ground, where the cinnabar appears to pool at the etching margins. Distribution pattern: pervasive cream-zone saturation with boundary concentration.
The Benefactor Motif (貴人 / 大人)
The Benefactor, 貴人 (guìrén) or 大人 (dàrén), is one of the most practically-oriented of all dzi motifs. It does not invoke cosmological forces or long-cycle aspirations — it calls in helpers. The motif is associated with the arrival of the right person at the right moment: a mentor who opens a door, a colleague who provides a referral, a stranger who offers the assistance that changes the trajectory of a situation. In Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist traditions, the benefactor is understood less as a category of person than as a function — the positive force that manifests through others when the conditions are right. Wearers of the Benefactor dzi traditionally sought support in practical domains: business decisions, career transitions, moments of medical need, and any situation where an outside hand could make a meaningful difference. The motif is considered to be particularly supportive during periods of change or uncertainty, when the wearer is navigating unfamiliar territory and would benefit from experienced guidance.
