Vintage Heaven & Earth Dzi, 38.2×13.4mm, warm dark brown agate, 1980s Taiwan (V-071126-HE)

The enclosed oval on this bead is not a perfect circle — it narrows slightly at the top and fills out at the bottom, giving the Heaven & Earth motif a teardrop quality that reads differently depending on which end of the bead is held upward.

Image 1 shows it most directly: the oval sits centrally on the warm dark brown face, its cream enclosing band giving way to a darker interior. Vertical cream stripe bars flank it on either side. From this angle, the composition is one of enclosure — the oval contained, the dark ground framing it. Image 3 shows the same motif from the opposite face, where the oval reads as a more angular, near-rectangular form — the same zone, the same structure, but the curvature of the barrel at this rotation closes the shape differently. Image 5 and image 6 show the motif from the two drill-hole angles, where the teardrop quality of the inner form is most visible — the pointed upper portion and the fuller lower are clearest from these three-quarter views.

Images 2 and 4 show the two connector faces — the zones between the primary motif faces, where the cream lines cross in an X or hourglass pattern against the dark brown ground. On image 2 the crossing is fluid and curved; on image 4 it is more angular, with stepped bracket-like cream elements. The two connectors are not identical, and the difference between them is visible in direct comparison.

The ground colour is warm dark brown throughout — consistent from face to face and extending to the end caps in images 5 and 6 without a separate cream end zone. This differs from the companion piece V-071126-3E, where a distinct warm grey end cap separates the motif zone from the drill point. Here, the dark ground continues to the tip of each end, and the drill holes sit within that same dark field.

The cream zones carry the same naturally aged granular surface quality visible on the companion piece — the characteristic texture that forty years of age produces on the etched cream areas of 1980s Taiwan agate. It is not a defect and it is not a deliberate treatment. It is what genuine vintage Taiwan cream zones look like under a close photograph.

The Heaven & Earth Motif

The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地珠) represents the axis that connects the two realms — the sky above and the earth below — and the single enclosed oval is understood as the meeting point between them, a portal or axis through which energy moves between the celestial and terrestrial. In Tibetan and Himalayan usage, the Heaven & Earth dzi is worn for harmony, balance, and the alignment of one's circumstances with the larger forces of the cosmos. Among Taiwan dzi produced in the 1980s, it is one of the most recognised forms.
