Six Eye Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots, 37.8×13.7mm, Pitch-Black Agate (V-102723-6EBS)
Authenticity guaranteed — every piece hand-inspected and accurately described. All photos below are unretouched, taken against a plain white background to show this bead's true colour and condition.
The six eyes on this bead sit against a pitch-black ground — and under magnification, the cream zones that frame each one are not empty at all.
This is a genuine vintage Taiwan dzi, produced in the 1980s and finished in natural agate. The ground is pitch-black, confirmed from flat-lit white-background photography across all four faces of the bead — a consistent, deep black that holds without any warm shift through the body, though both drilled ends show the characteristic warm brown tone at the tip where the stone meets the drill. The six eye motif is laid out three per face, with wave-form connecting lines running across the reverse faces between the eye positions — a layout that gives this bead a different composition depending on which face you are looking at.
Surface finish is smooth and well-polished, with the high gloss typical of quality 1980s Taiwan production intact across both the dark ground and the cream motif zones. No cracks or chips are visible in any of the photos — this is my own finding from the images, not a claim carried over from the existing listing. The drill channel is standard and cleanly executed at both ends.
Bloodspots
The macro photographs document cinnabar (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) inclusions clearly throughout this bead. The inclusions present as orange to rust-red micro-dots, scattered across the cream motif zones: concentrated within the eye ring cream bands, visible along the wave connecting lines, and appearing at the boundary zones where the cream etching meets the pitch-black ground. Distribution pattern: cream-zone focused scattered. The inclusions are consistent in colour and scale across all documented zones, with no single area of heavy concentration — a broadly dispersed presence throughout the cream work rather than a clustered or perimeter-only pattern.
The Six Eye Motif
The Six Eye motif is one of the most spiritually significant dzi designs in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, associated with the release from suffering and the cycles of samsara, the improvement of bodily and spiritual wellbeing, and protection against misfortune. It is considered a bead of balance — its six eyes correspond to the Six Realms of existence in Buddhist cosmology, and wearing or keeping one is believed to ease the passage through those realms toward liberation. On a vintage piece with well-documented bloodspot inclusions, the symbolic weight of the motif sits alongside a physical history that the stone itself carries.
