Most dzi beads in this collection are round in cross-section — this one isn't. Look at the drilled end and the shape is unmistakably triangular, three flat-ish faces meeting at rounded edges rather than a continuous curve, so the motif reads differently not just as it rotates but as it shifts from face to face.

This is a genuine vintage dzi bead, hand-carved and etched in Taiwan during the 1980s. The ground shows a confirmed two-zone structure: warm dark brown at both drilled ends, deepening to true black through the central body, verified independently across the relevant white-background photos for each zone. Against this, the cream-white motif detailing is crisp and high-contrast throughout.

The triangular form gives this bead a genuinely different presence face to face. One face shows a single eye — a small dark circle ringed in cream, framed by an angular, shield-like border with a pointed lower edge. Another face carries a scalloped, chevron-like wave pattern with no eye at all. A third view shows two eyes linked by flowing, spiral-like cream lines. Because of the triangular cross-section, turning this bead doesn't just shift the pattern gradually the way a round barrel would — it moves between genuinely distinct compositions. The high gloss finish and cream-white translucency visible at the drilled end both support natural agate as the material.
