The motif on this bead is a starburst — eight to twelve cream-white lines radiating from a central point, enclosed in a diamond-shaped frame, filling the belly of the bead. Fixed in cream-white on deep sienna carnelian, it looks like a compressed burst of light. The lines are freehand; no two are perfectly spaced, and the small variations between faces are the natural character of ancient hand-made work.

The diamond frame is formed by four diagonal lines meeting in points. Toward each end the design gives way to two parallel cream rings circling the bead, separating the decorated body from the warm amber tips. Banded ends, diamond frame, radiating centre: a layered, considered composition that reads differently up close and from a distance.

The carnelian is a deep sienna-brown, darker and richer than many carnelian beads, which makes the cream lines stand out strongly. The tips are a lighter, translucent amber-orange, and the same warm amber runs inside the drill holes. The surface has a smooth, even polish from centuries of handling.

The form is a classic elongated spindle, 49.6mm long and 10.7mm at its widest, tapering gracefully to both tips — the traditional proportion of etched carnelian, made to show the whole design as the bead turns.

Condition is excellent for its age: no cracks, no chips, clean drill holes, with the starburst and bands intact all the way round.

The Starburst Motif

The starburst or sunburst is one of the oldest designs in etched carnelian, with parallels across the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia and the trade routes reaching Tibet. Lines radiating from a point read everywhere as the sun's rays — warmth, light and vitality spreading in every direction. Worn on the body, a starburst bead is understood to carry that energy. The diamond frame adds protection and focus, holding the power close rather than letting it scatter.
