Ancient Carnelian Six Cross & Longevity Motif Bead — 27 mm, Tapered Octagon, 500–1000 Years (AC-101026-CL6)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

This bead is not round, not a barrel, and not symmetrical end to end. It is an octagonal prism — eight flat faces running its full length — with a deliberate taper from the wider end to the narrower: 10.0 mm at one end, 9.2 mm at the other. The form is uncommon in the etched carnelian tradition and places this bead within a distinct production category, the faceted and tapered octagonal tube, associated with workshops operating across Central and South Asia during the first millennium and into the early medieval period. Each of the eight faces carries a motif — six in total across the circumference, as the two narrowest transitional faces carry less defined patterning — distributed around the full circumference so that the bead reads as a continuous decorated object in rotation.

The motifs combine two distinct symbolic vocabularies: cross forms and longevity characters. The cross elements are abstract and open — not the tightly cusped floriate crosses of the companion carnelian in this collection, but more freely rendered forms with arms that extend to the edges of their panels, framed within rectangular cream borders whose lines have spread and bloomed over centuries of mineralisation. The longevity elements read as abbreviated character forms — the compressed, abstracted rendering of the Chinese longevity character (壽/寿) or related symbolic forms translated into the alkaline-etching vocabulary of the Central Asian bead tradition, where literal script and symbolic abstraction move freely between each other. The two motif types alternate or combine across the faces, each panel presenting a slightly different arrangement.

The etching on this bead has advanced further toward full mineralisation than almost any other piece in this collection. The white alkaline compound has not merely stained the carnelian surface — it has transformed over five to ten centuries into a thick, heavily textured mineral deposit that sits proud of the stone, its edges feathered and irregular where the material has bloomed beyond its original applied boundaries. In places the white deposit has spread into the surrounding carnelian, the distinction between etched line and open ground becoming a matter of degree rather than sharp edge. This extreme mineralisation is not deterioration — it is the physical record of the bead's age, and it cannot be replicated artificially.

The carnelian itself is exceptional: a saturated red-orange at the lateral faces, deepening to a rich brick-red at the ends, translucent and glowing where the stone is thinner, with the natural banding and internal colour variation of high-quality ancient carnelian worked and worn over many centuries. Both drill holes are small and clearly original, set in the end faces of the octagonal form. No cracks or chips are present.

Etched Carnelian, the Cross & the Longevity Motif

Etched carnelian beads represent one of the oldest decorative traditions in the world, with origins in the Indus Valley Civilisation and a production history that spans several millennia across Central and South Asia. The alkaline-etching technique — applying a plant-ash or mineral compound to carnelian and firing to produce a permanent white design — was refined over centuries into a sophisticated craft tradition whose products were traded from the Persian Gulf to the Tibetan plateau along the same routes that carried lapis lazuli, silk, and other luxury materials. The cross motif on etched carnelian carries a long history across multiple traditions, its four arms associated with the four cardinal directions and the extension of protective force across all of space. The longevity motif brings a distinct layer of intention: the wish for long life, enduring fortune, and the continuation of all good things across time. Together on a single bead, they represent protection across space and longevity across time — a complete amulet in miniature.
