Ancient Carnelian Six Cross & Longevity Motif Bead — 27 mm, Tapered Octagon, 500–1000 Years (AC-101026-CL6)
We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
This bead is not round, not a barrel and not symmetrical end to end. It is an octagonal prism — eight flat faces along its length — with a deliberate taper from 10.0mm at one end to 9.2mm at the other. The faceted, tapered octagon is uncommon in etched carnelian and belongs to a distinct production style found across Central and South Asia during the first millennium and into the early medieval period. Six motifs run around the bead (the two narrowest faces carry less defined patterning), so it reads as one continuous decorated object as it turns.
The motifs combine two symbolic vocabularies: crosses and longevity forms. The crosses are open and freely drawn, their arms reaching the edges of their panels within rectangular cream borders that have spread and bloomed over the centuries. The longevity elements are abbreviated, abstract renderings of the Chinese character for long life (壽) or related forms, translated into the language of etched beads. The two types alternate or combine, each panel slightly different.
The white decoration has reached an extreme state of mineral build-up — a thick, heavily textured deposit standing proud of the stone, its edges feathered where it has spread beyond the original lines. In places the white has blended into the carnelian, so line and ground meet softly rather than sharply. This is not deterioration but the physical record of the bead's great age.
The carnelian is exceptional: saturated red-orange on the sides, deepening to rich brick-red at the ends, translucent and glowing where the stone is thinner. Both drill holes are small and clearly original. No cracks or chips.
Etched Carnelian, the Cross and the Longevity Motif
Etched carnelian is one of the oldest decorated bead traditions in the world, beginning in the Indus Valley civilisation and continuing for millennia across Central and South Asia. The technique — applying an alkaline paste to carnelian and firing it to leave a permanent white design — became a refined craft whose beads were traded from the Persian Gulf to the Tibetan plateau. The cross, with its four arms pointing to the four directions, extends protection across all of space; the longevity motif adds the wish for long life and lasting good fortune. Together they offer protection across space and longevity across time — a complete amulet in miniature.
