Turn this bead 90° and you move between two different symbolic languages — the eye, which watches, and the gate, which opens — each given equal size and weight on opposite faces.

Face A carries the eyes: two fully closed concentric ring eyes side by side, each a thick cream-white ring around a pitch-black centre. Above and below, a cream-white wave band undulates around the pair, framing them, and two vertical stripe dividers stand at each side. The effect is architectural rather than decorative.

Face B carries the Earth Gate: two nested cream-white rectangular frames whose edges follow the same wave profile, enclosing a pointed-oval of warm dark brown agate at the centre. The same vertical dividers frame it. Two different motifs, built on one shared structure.

The ground is pitch-black, and the cream-white lines are thick, bold and even. The surface is high-gloss, smooth and well preserved for its age. The end caps are a warm honey-brown, with small, neat, centred drill holes.

Condition is excellent: no cracks, chips, medicine digs, pinholes or rework.

It is one of the few beads in our collection where eye and gate share a single body, set apart from our other four eyes — the tiger tooth At-082525-4ETT, the square-framed At-042626-4E3 and the ancient Ac-080425-4E.

The Four Eye and Earth Gate Motif

The Four Eye dzi (四眼天珠) is one of the most recognised forms in the tradition, offering protection in all four directions — a complete sphere of watchfulness. The Earth Gate (地門) is a less common element. Where the eye looks outward, the gate frames an enclosed space, representing the earth plane: bounded, structured and stable. Together they give the bead a dual purpose — eyes watching the world, and a gate holding the ground beneath.
