Prajna Dharma Eye Dzi with Bloodspots, 49.4×12.8mm, Translucent Warm Brown Chalcedony (At-061926-PDEBS)
We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
Hold this bead up to the light and it does something an agate dzi cannot: it glows. The backlit photograph (Image 8) shows the whole body lit from within, a warm golden-amber light running the full length of the stone, with the scroll motif as dark lines against it. This bead is chalcedony rather than agate — a more finely crystalline stone that is naturally more translucent.
The motif is the Prajna Dharma Eye (般若法眼). Despite the name, there is no separate eye ring. The design is built from flowing, interlocking scrolls: tight spiral curls unwinding into broader S-curves, small triangular accents at the line ends, and vertical stripe dividers framing the scrollwork on each side. Face A carries a single dominant spiral with an open C-curve beside it; Face B a tighter double spiral running into a longer S-wave. The two faces share a vocabulary without repeating each other — curve resolving into curve, nothing closed, nothing static.
In ordinary light the warm brown ground looks much like agate, but the backlit image reveals its depth, and that inner luminosity gives the cream-white lines a gentle softness at their edges. The lines show fine age micro-cracking, visible in the close-up photographs.
Bloodspots: The close-up photographs (Images 9 and 10) show natural cinnabar (朱砂) inclusions within the stone — small rust-brown specks scattered within the warm brown bands. They are light and sparse rather than dense, a quiet natural feature; the translucency is this bead's real centrepiece.
The end caps are warm honey-tan, smooth and rounded, with small neat drill holes. The surface is high-gloss throughout. No cracks, no chips — excellent condition for its age.
This is the only Prajna Dharma Eye dzi in the collection, and our only chalcedony focal bead with a scroll motif.
The Prajna Dharma Eye Motif
The name comes from Prajna — the transcendent wisdom that sees the true nature of reality beyond appearances, central to Mahayana Buddhism. The Dharma Eye is the capacity to see things as they really are, free of illusion and attachment. A dzi with this motif is worn less as a protective charm than as a support for insight: for those seeking clarity, discernment and deeper understanding. The flowing scrollwork is part of the meaning — wisdom is rarely shown as fixed. It unfolds gradually, much as this translucent stone reveals more the longer you look at it.
