The motif on this bead does not point upward. It opens outward.
Most people encountering the Four Leaf Bodhi for the first time expect a vertical composition — a leaf, a stem, a directional movement toward the light. What the etching on this bead actually presents is four arch-forms arranged in rotational symmetry around the bead's circumference, each one opening away from the centre, each one a distinct leaf shape resolved in cream on warm amber-brown agate. There is no top or bottom to this motif. Rotate the bead and the composition remains balanced at every position. The enlightenment it points toward is not above — it is in every direction simultaneously.
The amber-brown ground is the first thing the eye reads. This is not the near-black field of the two eye or nine eye beads in this collection — this is a warm, honey-toned agate, the kind that carries light differently depending on the angle. The cream motif lines are fully resolved, well-etched, with clean boundaries between the leaf arches and the ground. At the intersections where the arches meet, the patterning tightens into a small central node — the compositional anchor from which all four leaves radiate.
Then there are the bloodspots.
Bloodspots — known in Chinese as 硃砂 (zhūshā), also called cinnabar dots — are geological inclusions that form when mercury and sulfur are present during the agate's original formation. Mercuric sulfide crystallises within the stone as vermilion-to-orange-red micro-formations. In their purest form they are a deep red; in natural agate, where other minerals are also present, they read as orange-red to rust-toned flecks. No two bloodspot formations on any bead are identical — these are geological events locked into the stone hundreds of millions of years before anyone thought to carve a motif onto it. On this bead, the bloodspots are clearly visible in the photographs, distributed across the amber ground. They are a primary authentication marker for genuine aged agate dzi, and they are documented here exactly as they appear — unretouched, unenhanced, unaltered.
The body form is a compact barrel: 35.7mm long, 12.1mm in diameter — shorter and proportionally rounder than the elongated torpedoes elsewhere in this collection. This is a bead that sits fully in the palm. Both drill holes are clean and intact. The agate surface carries natural weathering marks consistent with a bead estimated to be 200 to 300 years old. No cracks.
The Four Leaf Bodhi Motif takes its name and meaning from the bodhi tree under which Shakyamuni Buddha achieved full enlightenment. The leaf is one of the oldest symbols in Tibetan Buddhist material culture — a marker of the moment when understanding became complete. Four leaves, arranged in the round, carry that symbolism without hierarchy or direction. This bead is worn or carried by those working toward clarity, toward the removal of confusion, toward the particular kind of stillness that precedes understanding.
