New Six Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 58.4 × 14.0mm, very deep dark brown agate fusiform (N-062226-6E)

Turn this bead 90° and the six eyes become something else entirely — open curves stacked in rows, wrapping the body like flowing script.

From the front, the Six Eye design is clear: three fully closed concentric ring eyes per face, evenly spaced along the bead, separated by vertical H-bar elements and framed by partial stripes at each end. The eyes are a muted warm off-white with a fine, slightly granular texture. Against the very deep warm brown ground, each ring reads with solid presence.

From the side (Images 4 and 5), the same lines read differently: the rings, seen edge-on, become downward-curving C-forms stacked in rows, with the stripe bands acting as dividers. It is the same design, seen two ways — closed protective eyes from the front, flowing curves from the side.

The bead is an elongated fusiform, 58.4mm × 14.0mm, with an asymmetric taper: one end is fuller and more rounded, the other narrows more sharply. Both drill holes are small and neatly centred. The surface is semi-gloss, slightly matte on the lines. The ground is a consistent very deep warm brown, lightening slightly at the tips where the agate's natural banding shows through.

This is a new bead, made within roughly the last 20 years using the traditional dzi crafting technique. No cracks or chips; only minor surface marks typical of new agate.

The Six Eye Motif

The Six Eye dzi (六眼天珠) is associated with the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum and with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Each eye is linked with one syllable and one of the six realms of existence. It is traditionally worn for wellbeing, protection from misfortune and support on the path beyond suffering.
