On this bead, the motif lines and the ground are nearly the same colour — and that near-match is the whole story.

Every other new dzi bead in this collection is built on contrast: dark ground, lighter motif. This Six Eye breaks that pattern. The ground is a medium warm brown — lighter and warmer than any of the other new dzi grounds this session — and the etched motif lines are a warm honey-gold to sandy-tan that sits close to the ground tone rather than standing apart from it. The result is a bead that reads as warm, unified, and almost monochromatic: the six eye composition is fully legible, but it does not announce itself. The motif is there — you can read all six eyes across the faces — but it reads quietly, the honey-gold curves emerging from the warm brown ground rather than cutting across it.

This is in direct contrast to its sibling N-062226-6E, which carries a very deep dark warm brown ground and a muted off-white motif that produces strong contrast. That piece states its composition boldly. This one asks you to look more carefully.

The six eye composition distributes three open C-ring eyes per face, connected by flowing curved lines, with vertical bar dividers sectioning the length. The eye forms here are softer and less sharply defined than in N-062226-6E — the low contrast between the honey-gold lines and the warm brown ground makes the ring boundaries more diffuse — but the count is consistent and readable from every straight-on view. Images 2, 3, 4, and 5 show the four main face orientations, each presenting the composition slightly differently as the bead rotates. Image 2 shows a face where the central eye reads more open and diffuse; Image 3 presents a face where the scroll-form connecting curves are more prominent; Images 4 and 5 show further rotations with their own subtle variations in how the honey-gold lines resolve.

The surface is semi-gloss to gloss throughout — notably more reflective than N-062226-6E's semi-matte character — and most visible at the end caps, where Images 6 and 7 show a warm glossy brown tip at each end with the small centred drill holes clearly intact. The taper is strongly asymmetric: one end (Image 6) closes more abruptly to a tight rounded tip; the other (Image 7) is noticeably broader and more gradual.

The form is an elongated fusiform, 58.2mm in length and 13.4mm in diameter. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. Several minor surface marks consistent with new agate production are present at close examination, none structural.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead.

The Six Eye Motif

The Six Eye motif (六眼天珠) is among the most significant in the dzi tradition, associated with the Six Syllable Mantra — Om Mani Padme Hum — and with Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Each of the six eyes corresponds to one syllable of the mantra and one of the six realms of existence, making the Six Eye dzi a complete compassionate statement: a bead that holds all six realms in its composition and invokes the mantra that transcends them. It is believed to improve physiological wellbeing, protect against misfortune, and support liberation from the cycle of suffering. On this bead the six eyes wrap the full body continuously, ensuring the complete count is present at every angle.
