New Nine Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 57.7 × 12.9mm, deep cool dark grey-black agate fusiform (N-062226-9E)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

This is the coolest-toned nine eye in the collection — and that distinction starts with the ground.

Every other new dzi bead processed in this session carries a warm ground: warm dark brown, very deep warm brown, very deep dark warm brown. This one does not. The ground here is a deep cool dark grey-black — confirmed from the white-background photographs, where the absence of warmth is clear and consistent. There is no brown undertone to read. The cool dark ground, combined with the pale silvery-grey motif lines, gives this nine eye a distinctly different visual register from any other piece in the new dzi series: cooler, quieter, and more restrained in its contrast than the cream-on-dark-brown pieces that surround it.

The motif is a Nine Eye composition distributed across the two main faces in the continuous flowing curved-line construction: nine open C-ring eyes, each formed by a circle with a smaller dark interior, connected by flowing curved lines that link each eye to the next and run continuously between the vertical bar dividers that section the body. Three eyes are readable per face from a straight-on view, with the remaining eyes becoming visible as the bead rotates. The motif lines are a cool pale silvery-grey — not cream, not white, not sandy-beige, but a distinctly cool and slightly metallic grey tone that is unique among the new dzi pieces in this collection. This cooler motif colour is partly a function of the ground: against a warm dark brown, a cream line reads warm; against a cool grey-black, the same etched surface reads grey.

The three flat-axis views (Images 2, 3, and 4) each present a slightly different section of the composition as the bead is rotated — the relative positions of the eye forms and the connecting curves shift subtly from face to face, with no two views presenting an identical arrangement. Image 2 shows the fullest and clearest face; Images 3 and 4 show the composition from the two remaining orientations, each with its own slight variation in how the curve lines read.

The form is an elongated fusiform, 57.7mm in length and 12.9mm in diameter, with the most strongly asymmetric taper of any new dzi in this session — one end (Image 5) narrows dramatically to a tight, dark, rounded tip; the other (Image 6) closes more gradually and broadly. Both drill holes are small and centred, clearly visible at each tip. The surface is semi-matte in the etched zones with slightly more gloss on the ground areas.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. Minor surface marks consistent with new agate production are present at close examination, none structural.

The Nine Eye Motif

The Nine Eye motif (九眼天珠) is regarded in Tibetan dzi tradition as the most powerful of all eye motifs — the full enumeration of the protective eye across all nine zones of auspicious influence. Nine is a number of completion and supreme attainment in Tibetan cosmology, and the Nine Eye dzi is associated with the accumulation of merit, the attraction of wealth and opportunity, and the protection of the wearer across all domains of life. It is among the most sought-after dzi motifs in the collection, collected widely across East and Southeast Asia as a talisman of comprehensive good fortune.
