There is no blank face on either of these beads — the criss-cross lattice runs from end cap to end cap without interruption, leaving no surface uncovered.

Most dzi beads organise their motif elements around faces and dividers — an eye here, a stripe there, connector elements in between. These two beads work entirely differently. The cream criss-cross lines run diagonally in two directions simultaneously across every inch of each bead's surface, their intersections so densely packed that the dark triangular voids between them read not as ground but as negative space caught inside the lattice. The motif is not on the bead — it is the bead. Turn either piece to any angle and the same interlocking diagonal pattern continues without break or blank zone.

The two beads carry this shared coverage pattern on grounds at opposite ends of the same spectrum. Bead A (visible in Images 2–4) has deep warm dark brown triangular voids with a distinct burgundy undertone — the carnelian's natural deep reddish-brown visible inside each diamond void. Bead B (Images 5–7) is darker throughout, its ground reading as very deep near-black, the warm undertone only faintly present and the cream lines reading with notably higher contrast against the deeper field. Same motif, same coverage density, same dimensions within 0.3mm — and still two different stones.

The cream criss-cross lines have a rough, granular, heavily weathered texture throughout both beads — the etching surface has mineralised and partially reintegrated with the surrounding carnelian over five to seven centuries, giving the lines a raised, almost encrusted quality visible across all six photographs. This is one of the most reliable visual markers of genuine ancient age in an etched carnelian bead.

The form is an elongated narrow cylinder — slender at 9.1mm diameter, long at 49.2mm and 48.9mm, with a gentle taper at both ends and the small centred drill holes of ancient hand-drilling visible at the tips. No cracks or structural damage observed on either bead across all six photographs. This is an independent finding.

The Criss-Cross Motif

The criss-cross or lattice motif in ancient South Asian and trans-Himalayan etched carnelian bead traditions belongs to one of the oldest and most labour-intensive decorative vocabularies — a full-coverage pattern that required the maker to lay down two complete sets of diagonal lines across the entire surface in precise register, each line intersecting the other at equal intervals. The resulting lattice creates a net-like enclosure interpreted across traditions as a protective weave — a bead whose surface leaves no opening through which harm or misfortune might pass. The dense triangular voids between the lines are the ground made visible by the motif's total coverage: not background but interior space, caught and held within the crossing lines.
