We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
On this face, heaven and earth are not described separately — they are placed side by side, and the distance between them is one pitch-black field.
That placement is what the Double Heaven & Earth composition does. Face A of this bead carries two distinct motif elements within the same central field: a fully enclosed oval to the left — rounded, curved, the heaven gate — and a rectangular frame to the right — structured, angular, bounded — the earth element. They are not the same shape, and that difference is not incidental. The oval is the motif of the infinite, the arch, the sky that has no corners. The rectangle is the motif of the finite — the bounded ground, the measured field, the place where things are contained. The maker placed them next to each other on a single pitch-black face, and the bead has been making that argument for a thousand years.
The body is an elongated fusiform — 36.2mm in length against 10.8mm in diameter, giving the bead a long, slender silhouette that tapers acutely at both ends to small, well-centred drill holes. The aspect ratio of approximately 3.4:1 is characteristic of the most elongated ancient dzi forms and gives this bead a distinctly different physical presence from the broader, shorter beads in this collection. In hand it is narrow and light; photographed against a white background, the full length reads as a single compositional sweep from tip to tip. The ground throughout the body is pitch-black — confirmed from white-background photographs — with the warm honey-brown of the natural agate appearing only at the extreme tapered tips where the ancient acid darkening process did not fully penetrate. These honey-brown tips are a characteristic feature of authentically acid-etched ancient dzi and are visible in Images 2 and 7.
Face A is the primary reading face. From left: a cream-white stripe band near the drill hole tip; a pitch-black field; the oval heaven element — a fully enclosed circular cream-white ring with a pitch-black interior, the ring bold and well-defined; a pitch-black field; the rectangular earth element — a cream-white frame enclosing a pitch-black interior with a horizontal cream-white bar dividing the interior into two registers; a pitch-black field; a cream-white stripe band near the opposite tip; the honey-brown end. When you rotate the bead 90° to Face B, the oval and rectangle appear in cross-section: the oval reads as a cream arch above and a cream arc below flanking a dark band; the rectangular frame reads as a series of horizontal cream-white bars. The composition does not disappear on rotation — it transforms, presenting a second coherent reading that is structurally related to the first but visually distinct. It is this quality — the same motif generating different statements at different angles — that the Heaven & Earth dzi tradition is built around.
The motif lines throughout are bright warm cream-white, bold and well-resolved. The pitch-black ground shows slight age-appropriate micro-texture in close-up photographs — not the high-gloss of a new bead but the subtly granular surface that accumulates over centuries of handling. No chips, cracks, medicine digs, or surface damage are present in any photograph. No bloodspot inclusions are detected.
In this collection, the Heaven & Earth motif has appeared on two antique beads: At-121824-HE2, which presents four distinct statements as it rotates on a deep dark brown ground, and At-082324-HE3, whose oval is open-topped — a gate without a ceiling. Ac-052523-DHE differs from both: it is ancient rather than antique, its ground is pitch-black rather than dark brown, its oval is fully enclosed, and it carries both the oval and the rectangular earth frame together on the same face — the complete heaven-and-earth statement in a single composition rather than a single element rotated through four readings.
The Double Heaven & Earth Motif 雙天地天珠
The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地天珠, tiāndì tiānzhū) is one of the most conceptually complete motifs in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Heaven (天, tiān) is rendered as the oval or circular open form — curved, boundless, associated with sky, spirit, and the uncontained. Earth (地, dì) is rendered as the rectangle or structured frame — bounded, measured, associated with ground, matter, and the contained. Together they hold the complete field of existence: everything above and everything below, the invisible and the visible, the principle and its manifestation. In Tibetan and broader Himalayan use, the Heaven & Earth dzi has been associated with balance between opposing forces — Yin and Yang in Chinese cosmological framing — and with the capacity to move successfully between different planes of experience. It is considered particularly auspicious for those who must navigate between worlds: the trader who moves between regions, the practitioner who moves between states of mind, the person who must hold both the expansive and the grounded simultaneously. The double composition — both elements present together on one face — intensifies this quality, making explicit what a single-element bead implies.
