Turn this bead 90° and the circle becomes a cross — not a variation, not a related form, but its precise geometric opposite.

That transformation is the compositional logic of the Heaven & Earth dzi. Face A carries the heaven element: a large, fully enclosed concentric ring — an outer cream-white ring, a deep dark brown interior zone, an inner cream-white ring, and at the very centre a dark pupil with a small cream-white dot. The form is circular, continuous, bounded, complete. There are no edges, no corners, no interruption. Flanking this central oval on both sides are pairs of vertical cream-white stripe bands that frame the composition and run toward the end tips. Face B carries the earth element: the same stripe bands framing a completely different central composition — a bold X-cross formed by four curved cream-white triangular forms meeting at a central point, the dark ground showing through in the four zones between the arms. Where Face A is round and closed, Face B is angular and open. Where one curves, the other points. They are made from the same etching process on the same stone, and they are opposites in every formal property.

The bead is 41.8×12.3mm — a well-proportioned elongated fusiform, symmetrically tapered at both ends to small, well-centred drill holes. The ground throughout is a deep dark warm chocolate-brown, distinct from pitch-black: there is definite warmth in the dark tone, visible in all photographs against the white background, particularly where the dark ground meets the cream-white motif lines at their edges and the agate's natural warmth shows through. The motif lines are bright cream-white with a slight warm sandy-cream quality — bold, well-defined, and consistent across both faces. The end tips (visible in Images 6 and 7) show honey-tan to sandy-brown warmth at the poles where the natural agate colour is most exposed.

The surface is semi-gloss on the dark ground zones, with a slightly matte-granular quality in the cream-white etched areas consistent with 500–700 years of age and handling. Fine surface weathering micro-lines are visible crossing the cream stripe bands in Images 2 and 4 — these are surface-level weathering features in the etching layer, not structural cracks, and are fully disclosed. No chips, medicine digs, or damage are present. No bloodspot inclusions are detected in any photograph.

In this collection, the Heaven & Earth motif appears on two antique agate beads and one other ancient: At-121824-HE2 presents four different statements as it rotates on a deep dark brown ground; At-082324-HE3 carries an open-top oval gate; and Ac-052523-DHE places both the oval and the rectangular earth frame together on the same face in a pitch-black fusiform. Ac-082325-DHE2 differs from all three: the heaven and earth elements occupy separate faces entirely, the heaven element is a fully enclosed concentric double ring rather than a simple oval outline, and the earth element is an X-cross rather than a rectangular frame — making the formal contrast between the two faces sharper and more visually absolute than any other Heaven & Earth dzi in the collection.

The Heaven & Earth Motif 天地天珠

The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地天珠, tiāndì tiānzhū) holds the complete field of existence in a single object. Heaven (天, tiān) is the curved, continuous, boundless — the oval or circle that has no beginning point and no end. Earth (地, dì) is the structured, angular, measurable — the cross or rectangle that has corners, directions, and defined boundaries. Together they map the totality: above and below, spirit and matter, the infinite and the finite. In Tibetan and broader Himalayan use, the Heaven & Earth dzi is associated with the balance of opposing forces and with the practitioner's capacity to hold both registers simultaneously — to be grounded in the material world while remaining open to the spiritual one. The X-cross earth element on this bead carries additional resonance: in many traditions the cross at the centre of a bounded field represents the four directions, the four elements, or the four noble truths — making this earth face not merely a counterpoint to the heaven oval but a complete cosmological statement in its own right.
