We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
This bead comes with something no other nine-eye dzi in this collection has — video footage of it under UV light, showing the fluorescence pattern that distinguishes ancient acid-etched agate from modern reproductions.
That UV footage is included in the listing videos because authenticity at this age level — over 1,000 years — is not something that should require the buyer to simply trust the seller's word. Ancient acid-etched agate responds to UV light differently from modern materials, and the fluorescence visible in the test footage is one of the most reliable non-destructive indicators available to collectors and authenticators. The bead passes. What you see in the photographs and in the UV video is the same object, unretouched, unmodified, and fully disclosed.
The bead itself is 53.1×12.8mm — a long, elegant fusiform with a well-proportioned taper at both ends to small, well-centred drill holes with warm sandy-tan interiors. The ground throughout the body is a deep warm dark brown — confirmed against white backgrounds in all lateral photographs as a warm dark tone rather than pitch-black, with the warmth of the underlying agate showing through in the ground zones and clearly visible at the sandy-tan end caps where the acid etching reached its natural limit. The surface is semi-matte to matte throughout — the kind of surface that 1,000 years of handling, handling, and time produces. The cream-white etching zones carry a slight granular texture when examined closely, the aged surface of the whitened agate visible in the angled shots of Images 5 and 6.
The nine eyes are distributed across the full circumference of the bead in the classic nine-eye meander composition — the continuous wave-and-eye structure that links all nine positions into a single unbroken motif line. From any lateral face, three eyes are visible; as the bead rotates, the remaining six come into view in sequence, with the connector bands and partial eye rings creating the impression of a continuous flowing composition rather than nine discrete elements. Each eye is an open C-ring or oval form: a cream-white outer ring with a warm honey-brown to dark brown pupil at the centre. The cream-white motif lines on this bead are notably broad and generous — thick, well-filled bands that make the cream-white a substantial visual presence against the warm dark brown ground. The horizontal connector bands linking the eye positions are wide and bold, giving the full composition a strong graphic weight that the photographs communicate clearly from every angle.
This is the first ancient (Ac prefix) nine-eye dzi in this collection. The four other nine-eye beads — At-011625-9E, At-051525-9E2, At-083025-9E3, and At-012325-9E4 — are all antique, with age ranges from 100 to 500 years. Ac-032326-9E5 predates all of them by at least five centuries. Its matte-granular surface, its broad cream-white etching character, and the UV verification footage place it in a different category from those four beads — not simply older, but belonging to a different era of production and use. No chips, cracks, medicine digs, or structural damage are present. No bloodspot inclusions are detected in any photograph.
The Nine Eye Motif 九眼天珠
The nine-eye dzi (九眼天珠, jiǔ yǎn tiānzhū) is the most coveted configuration in the entire Tibetan dzi tradition, often described as the King of Dzi Motifs. Nine is the number of completion in Tibetan numerology — nine planets, nine levels of consciousness, nine categories of merit accumulated across lifetimes. A nine-eye dzi is understood as a bead that holds the complete field: all nine planes of existence, all nine directions of space (the four cardinal, the four diagonal, and the centre), and the full accumulation of merit that spans all nine categories. In practical Himalayan use, the nine-eye dzi has been sought above all other dzi configurations for wealth, protection, health, and spiritual power simultaneously — a bead that addresses every dimension of existence in a single object. Wealthy merchants, political leaders, and senior monastics across Tibet and the broader Himalayan world have historically prized the nine-eye dzi as the supreme amulet. A piece over 1,000 years old — with UV-verified ancient etching, a well-preserved surface, and nine eyes that have survived a millennium of circulation — is a rare piece of that history.
