The double wave on a round bead has no fixed reading — every rotation presents the same two cream curves from a different angle, and each time the composition resolves differently. Face it straight on and it reads as a bold diamond between vertical stripes. Turn it a quarter and the two waves emerge as opposed arcs, one curving down from the left and one rising from the right, the space between them forming an hourglass. Turn it again and the waves collapse back into V-shaped chevrons pointing toward each other. The motif is continuous and the reading is never the same twice.

At 800 to 1,000 years of age, this is one of the oldest pieces in the collection, and the surface shows it. The pitch-black ground zones — confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photographs — carry a pervasive fine matte crystallisation across their entire surface: not the smooth gloss of a younger antique piece but a dense, granular mineral texture that has developed within the stone over the course of centuries. Under UV light this surface crystallisation becomes dramatically visible, spreading across every dark zone as a fine interlocking pattern consistent with deep age transformation of the agate matrix. The cream motif lines remain bright and distinct — the contrast between the crystallised dark ground and the cream wave elements is, if anything, stronger under UV than in natural light.

The UV test documents what the surface character already suggests: a bead of genuine ancient age, with no indicators of artificial treatment or modern enhancement. The UV response across the dark zones shows the warm, uneven tonal character of naturally aged agate rather than the bright uniform fluorescence associated with modern chemical processing.

One condition note: a small chip is present at one drill end, visible in the drill-end photograph. This is disclosed as found and does not affect the structural integrity of the bead or the motif presentation on any face.

The Double Wave (གཡུ་ཁྲ) Motif

The double wave dzi is one of the foundational motifs of the Tibetan dzi tradition, its two opposed curves understood as the pairing of complementary forces — heaven and earth, wisdom and method, the upward and downward movements of breath and energy in the body. In Tibetan Buddhist cosmology the wave form evokes the continuous flow of cause and effect across lifetimes, and the double wave in particular is associated with harmony between opposing forces and with the protection of relationships. On a round bead, the double wave wraps the full circumference of the stone — there is no front and back, only a continuous flowing composition that accompanies the wearer from every direction simultaneously.
